The BMI Albyn Hospital has a team of cosmetic surgeons that can offer a wide range of cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. To request an appointment, you can either contact the hospital or ask your GP to refer you directly. Alternatively, the hospital can offer an appointment with one of our private GP's who can refer you on to a relevant consultant.
Breast Reduction Surgery
Heavy and large breasts can cause various issues from back, shoulder or neck pain, to skin rashes and infection as a result of clothing not fitting correctly around the breasts. The correction surgery is not complicated, it entails the removal of fatty tissues through a small cut under your breast and the nipples may have to be repositioned in order to give a natural finish.
Following this surgery there will be some restrictions on certain activities such as lifting and taking part in physical exercise in the first few weeks. Thereafter you should notice an improvement in your symptoms and ability to undertake normal activities.
Breast augmentation or breast enlargement can be offered to anyone who is looking to increase the size of their breasts or to improve the shape. If you are considering this procedure, our plastic surgeons will assess the suitability of this surgery with you first to ensure that you are adequately prepared and that your expectations can be met.
The surgery itself involves making a small cut in the crease of the breast, areola or armpit where space will be created to fit an implant. This implant can be filled with silicone or a salty solution called saline and there are various different shapes to choose from. Before your surgery our consultant will advise you on the most appropriate implant that would suit you.
Breasts will naturally change shape with age, pregnancy, breast feeding and weight loss. Breast lift surgery, also known as mastopexy, can offer a solution to this by removing loose skin along with uplifting and reshaping the breast.
There are various types of breast lift procedures and this depends on the breast size and what results you are looking for. A consultation with one of our surgeons will allow you to choose the most appropriate option for you.
Weight Loss Surgery
There are various different procedures that can be performed to assist weight loss. This will depend on what would be the most appropriate for you and the lifestyle that you lead. Gastric balloon can be inserted into the stomach to partially fill your stomach which will reduce the urge for food. A gastric band can be placed around the stomach to restrict the amount of food that can be eaten before feeling full. Gastric bypass involves using a stapler to divide the stomach and will allow the food to bypass the rest of the stomach into the small intestine.
There are times when no matter how much exercise is done, there are still areas of fat that do not shift. Liposuction can remove fatty deposits by placing a tube into the relevant areas and removing it by suction. Areas that can be treated are the stomach, arms, thighs and buttocks.
Tummy Tuck Surgery
Tummy tuck or abdominoplasty can remove excess folds of skin around your middle that can be a result of significant weight loss or the aging process.
During surgery, the consultant plastic surgeon will make various neat cuts in your abdomen allowing the removal of fat and the tightening of the main muscle.
Rhinoplasty is a procedure which can reshape your nose and reduce its size and can benefit people who have an abnormal structure within the inside or outside of the nose. Abnormal nasal structures can make it difficult to breathe and give you a feeling of blocked nose. Alternatively, you may not like the shape of your nose, especially if it is not in harmony with the rest of your face.
This surgery is usually performed from the inside of the nose with the bone and tissue being manipulated, shaved and removed in order to reshape, narrow and/or straighten the nose.
The aim of this surgery would be to either improve the cosmetic look of the nose and to improve its function.
With age the skin around the lower part of your face can lose its elasticity which can cause the muscle and skin to slacken. Our consultant plastic surgeons will consider whether this surgery is suitable for you and will talk you through the various options.
During surgery, the consultant will tighten and reposition the skin and soft tissue of the face by making cuts on both sides of the face, hairline, around and behind the ear and into the lower scalp area. There may be times that the surgeon will recommend lifting the neck skin and muscle at the same time.
It would generally take up to six weeks for you to recover from this surgery and you would expect to see the final results of the facelift within 6-9 months. Smoking can cause a reduction in the blood supply to the skin and muscle so if you are a smoker then you can help reduce the risks of any complications if you stop at least 6 weeks before the operation.
