At BMI Albyn Hospital in Aberdeen our experienced consultants in the IBS clinic can treat or help manage your symptoms relating to bowel disturbances.
What is IBS?
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a very common disorder and can result in a diverse range of symptoms. These include altered bowel habit with either constipation or diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain and bloating. Factors such as stress and diet can play a major role in this condition. IBS can have a major impact on peoples’ quality of life and many of the available medications can have little effect. There is no definitive test to diagnose IBS and often patients do not need extensive investigation. However, several other conditions can present with similar symptoms and it is important to take a thorough medical and dietetic history.
Is the IBS Clinic for me?
You may be recommended to attend the IBS clinic if you suffer from the following symptoms:
- Abdominal cramps
- Needing the toilet but not being able to go
What can I expect on my visit?
The IBS clinic aims to provide a rapid, thorough assessment of patients with suspected IBS. We offer a combined clinic review with an experienced Consultant Gastroenterologist and a Specialist Dietitian who both specialise in managing patients with IBS. They can suggest appropriate medical and dietary interventions after assessment of individual symptoms. A follow-up dietetic review will be arranged to assess progress and after careful review, further investigations may be recommended and these can be discussed in detail.
