Albyn Hospital is delighted to announce the introduction of their Sports Massage Therapy Service. Although this service works hand in hand with the Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic, this new service is available to anyone.
What is Massage Therapy?
Massage Therapy involves manipulation of soft tissues, including skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia. Massage therapists are trained in techniques that address issues within soft tissues such as tightness, overuse, fatigue and pain. They do this with their hands or with specially designed tools. The application of sports massage, prior to and/or after exercise, may enhance performance, aid recovery and help avoid injury.
How does it work?
The physical and mechanical effects of Massage Therapy include;
- increased blood circulation
- releasing muscle tension
- reduced swelling
- remodelling of scar tissue
- lengthening soft tissue
- increasing flexibility
All of the above can aid the removal of waste products such as lactic acid and encourage muscles to absorb oxygen and nutrients. This in turn can decrease the onset of muscle fatigue and soreness and can aid recovery from training or injury.
There are also a number of physiological and psychological benefits of massage such as release of endorphins and reducing stress hormones. This includes things such as stress reduction, enhanced wellbeing, improved body awareness, pain reduction and relaxation.
How would it benefit the individual?
Massage Therapy can be beneficial to people who are engaged in regular physical activity, but you don’t need to be an elite athlete to benefit.
It may also help people who don’t engage in physical activity, but have sustained an injury or muscle strain, or equally those who feel they have built up muscle tension through the stresses and strains of work and daily life.
The benefits of Massage Therapy include:
- Enhanced recovery from training or injury
- Reduce pain from muscle soreness or tension
- Aid in mental preparation for sporting participation
- Improved mobility of soft tissues and joints
- Aid relaxation
- Reduced stress levels
- Improved flexibility and posture
- Improved body awareness
- Enhanced general health and wellbeing
