Albyn Hospital offers an oncology service covering treatment of malignant disease in breast, lung, upper gastro-intestinal tract.
Up to date evidence provides the basis for treatment delivered within the unit. The administration of chemotherapy and support therapies is delivered by a team of skilled, experienced oncology nurses, a consultant oncologist and other staff members.
Patients can choose to have their care delivered in hospital or at home or a combination of both settings. This care is shared between BMI Healthcare and Healthcare at Home. This partnership allows patients who may live distant from Albyn Hospital to have treatment delivered at home to minimise travel and inconvenience. Referrals to this service are made through your GP.
If a patient requires radiotherapy they will be referred to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary to continue their treatment, remaining under the continued care of their oncology consultant.
Our multidisciplinary cancer team work closely together to provide wrap around patient care. The team includes:
- Consultant Oncologist
- Consultant Surgeons
- Oncology Nurses
- Specialist Nurses
The team will work with the patient to plan a treatment schedule and will discuss with them how long the treatments are likely to take. When being discharged from hospital our nursing team will liaise with Consultant, GP and community based staff to ensure the discharge process is appropriate to individual patient needs. We have a close relationship with local cancer support groups and charities in and around Aberdeen and can make appropriate referrals to them for on-going support.
To ensure each patient feels well supported there is a 24 hour on-call service available from Healthcare at Home. In addition all patients are welcome to attend the Breast Friends support group which meets monthly at Albyn Hospital.
Our Oncology Liaison Nurse is on site on Tuesday and Wednesday and is available to answer any queries about this service. She can be contacted directly on 01224 595993 ext.470334.
