Diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer
Patients with suspected breast cancer come to see us – and, if they present with cancer of the breast, oncoplastic breast surgery involves incising a tumour oncologically and reshaping the breasts. This helps us ensure we have the best oncological outcome and the best aesthetic outcome, says our Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon.
Many of the ladies that come to see us who have had mastectomies in the past, are surprised to learn there are a few techniques we can use, which allow us to remove a tumour while keeping the breast.
For example, in ladies who have a larger cup size, we can do a breast reduction and remove the tumour. It’s not the ‘old standard’ lumpectomy or mastectomy; there are other ways we can remove the tumour to conserve the breast, says our Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon.
If we see anything on the ultrasound, we may arrange for them to have other investigations, including a tissue biopsy, says our Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon.
A one-stop clinic, everything, in terms of investigations, is done on the same day at Albyn Hospital. Within oncology itself, the patient will be seen by the surgeon – either the Breast Surgeon or the Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon.
They will have scans on the day and a biopsy may be needed, for which they will get their provisional results that evening. They will then either be discharged or invited to come back after a couple of weeks to discuss treatment following a biopsy.
There is no private hospital beyond Aberdeen, and it is not unusual, therefore, for people to travel to BMI Albyn Hospital from as far away as Inverness.
