Quick and easy access to our team of private gynaecologists
Gynaecology is a broad specialty which covers a host of conditions relating to the female reproductive system. Most women who visit Albyn Hospital present with either issues with their periods, or with pain, or prolapse. Sometimes, they visit with other general wellbeing issues of the reproductive organs, problems after menopause or concerns about any sinister diagnosis.
Our clinic provides a comprehensive healthcare service, including issues due to the menstrual cycle, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids, polyps and postmenopausal problems and other gynaecology issues. The gynaecology practice at Albyn Hospital is described by our Consultant Gynaecologist as a one-stop clinic for women’s health.
It’s worth noting, however, that the field of gynecology does not cover obstetrics - pregnancy care or fertility treatments. However, some conditions (such as Polycystic ovary syndrome and Endometriosis) can impact fertility, and this can be discussed with patients who visit the hospital.
Offering routine gynaecological investigations and minimal access surgery, one of our Consultants is the lead for the Aberdeen Endometriosis Centre, which provides tertiary care services for endometriosis patients in the North and North East of Scotland.
Focusing on a host of conditions, including endometriosis and pelvic pain, menstrual problems, pelvic floor dysfunction and all general gynaecological problems in premenopausal and postmenopausal women, our Gynaecology Consultants here in Aberdeen have a keen interest in women’s health research.
Working with Endometriosis UK and the Scottish government to improve awareness of endometriosis, as well as to meet the recommendations from a recent all party parliamentary report, most endometriosis research is undertaken by consultants who also work at Albyn Hospital.
Below, we take a brief look at some of the conditions our patients visit our specialist at Albyn Hospital with.
A common condition our seen is endometriosis; it affects around one in 10 women, and causes painful periods and pelvic pain, amongst other symptoms. It can also affect fertility.
Often, there is a huge delay in diagnosis from presentation of symptoms to first diagnosis (by laparoscopy). Currently, it takes an average of eight years and we aim to increase awareness of the condition.
Pelvic Pain
Felt below the belly button, pelvic pain can come on suddenly and may last for months. It can be caused by endometriosis, but this is not always the case.
Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
The inability to control the muscles of the pelvic floor, pelvic floor dysfunction symptoms can include urinary issues, constipation or bowel strains, lower back pain, and pain during sexual intercourse.
Menstrual Problems
Menstrual problems, including heavy menstrual bleeding, or irregular, erratic, or prolonged periods are quite common, says our Consultant Gynaecologist. In fact, around one in five women usually require some investigation and are quite easily treated, both by medical treatment as well as surgical treatment, and lastly, hysterectomy.
Perimenopausal and Menopausal Issues
Perimenopause and menopause bring about a host of hormonal changes, which can negatively affect a woman’s day-to-day life. These include abnormal periods in perimenopause specifically, mood swings, anxiety, hot flushes and more.
Allowing a surgeon to access the inside of the abdomen and pelvis without making large incisions in the skin, this minimally invasive surgery can help diagnose gynecological conditions, including endometriosis.
Hysteroscopic Surgery
In hysteroscopic surgery, a surgeon can look inside your uterus to diagnose conditions including abnormal bleeding. Using a hysteroscope – a thin tube with a camera, which is inserted into the vagina – your cervix and inside of the uterus can easily be examined.
At your initial gynaecology or gynae-oncology consultation, our Consultant Gynaecologist will usually take your medical history and discuss the possible diagnosis.
At your appointment, medical treatment can be prescribed, and minor procedures can be done on the same day.
There is a possibility to do an ultrasound in the clinic there and then, along with some other minor procedures, such as an endometrial biopsy, if needed, and undertake other minor gynaecological procedures, such as fitting a coil, or removing a polyp from the cervix but some of these may be performed on a separate day.
Any surgical procedures requiring an anesthetic, would need an admission to the ward in due course. For many patients, it's a convenient, ‘one-stop’ clinic.
"Full hysterectomy. Operation and care 100%. All staff ver friendly and thorough" - Jane, (Google Review September 2022)
When visiting Albyn Hospital, patients can book directly with the consultant of their choice. You may also be able to opt for a remote consultation (by telephone), which means you can chat with a specialist from the comfort of your home.
However, gynecology and gynae-oncology usually require an examination, so in that case, a face-to-face consultation would be needed.
