At BMI Bath Clinic in Somerset, we provide general surgery, a wide-ranging area of medicine focusing on many parts of the body, but with special interest in the abdomen area and vascular procedures.
The general surgeons at BMI Bath Clinic have an extensive set of skills and knowledge because they have to carry a large number of elective surgeries. These include:
A hernia happens when internal tissue or organs protrude through the walls that contain them. While there are different types of hernia, most appear in the abdomen. Hernia repair surgery will usually be considered as an option if a hernia is causing recurring pain or if it leads to any other complications. Depending on the location and type of hernia, our general surgeons will discuss the potential options for treatment with you, such as open or laparoscopic surgery.
Surgery to remove the gallbladder may be recommended if you are suffering from painful gallstones or gallbladder disease. Also referred to as cholecystectomy, this is a common procedure and will often be conducted using keyhole surgery, where several small incisions are made in order to be able to remove the gallbladder.
Our experienced general surgeons will usually conduct a colonoscopy to examine the inside of the colon so that they may determine any issues with the large intestine. A thin and flexible tube with a camera called colonoscope will be used, , that passes through the anus and into the large intestine. The procedure may be used to examine inflammatory bowel disease, polyps or suspected cancerous growths.
Vascular surgery deals with treating diseases of the arteries and veins. This is caused by a thickening of the artery wall, leading to a hardening of the arteries and a lack of blood supply, commonly to the heart, brains or legs. Varicose vein removal is a type of vascular surgery designed to remove the whole vein. Left untreated, varicose veins can often become unsightly and also prevent the healthy flow of blood.
Haemorrhoids, sometimes referred to as piles, are swelling blood vessels found either inside or outside the anus. There are a wide range of causes, from straining and obesity to pregnancy or constipation. Haemorrhoid surgery will stretch the anus muscle so that the piles can be surgically removed with the end goal of removing all the discomfort, pain and bleeding associated with haemorrhoids.
Endocrinology is usually concerned with disturbances in adult hormone glands. Our consultants can help you manage diabetes or an endocrine disorder, to ensure you receive the best possible treatment in a timely manner. This includes making a diagnosis, driving an investigation and supporting a personalised treatment for all endocrine disorders.
Nail surgery will either consist of part of the nail, referred to as partial nail avulsion, or the whole nail, referred to as total nail avulsion. Our experienced general surgeons at BMI Bath Clinic will explain why they think nail surgery is necessary, after having identified the cause. Common causes include an ingrown toenail, or thick nails that are causing pain and pressure in the shoe.
