At Bishops Wood Hospital we have developed our service to ensure we have a strong body of senior oncology nursing staff on hand to ensure every aspect of this journey is given the appropriate advice and support.
The senior nursing staff have strong affiliations with the Mount Vernon Cancer Network and utilise these links to ensure our services are in line with the department of health guidelines and recommendations. Therefore patients can feel rest assured that our nursing team always share the best interests of the patients they treat and care for.
Caring for our patients is of the utmost importance to us, which is why the renovations at the Pinner Park Ward were designed around patient input. The ward has a calm and welcoming environment, and patients are treated by a network of specialists including:

In addition to diagnostic scanning technology (MRI and CT), eligible breast cancer patients have access to single dose intraoperative radiotherapy (SD-IORTtm). SD-IORTtm provides breast surgeons and clinical oncologists with the ability to perform radiotherapy at the time of surgery, which eliminates the need for separate external beam radiotherapy, for up to 5 weeks post-surgery.

Our pathology department has equipment to provide rapid results for blood tests ahead of treatment, providing key guidance for further care. Results are often same day and the team supports our transfusion services and other specialist inputs.

Oncology nursing services manager
Our oncology nursing manager has a wide ranging oncology & chemotherapy nursing background. She has worked in both NHS and private oncology settings and is passionate about delivering a high standard of patient care at every aspect of the patients’ journey. Since joining the team she has implemented a complete restructure of the oncology services and has worked to improve the facilities available to our patients. Appointments can be arranged for you to spend time with the nursing manager to discuss any aspect of your care.
Macmillan Breast Clinical Nurse Specialist
The breast care service at BMI Bishops Wood Hospital is a Bupa Accredited Breast Care Service. Daily rapid access to the breast care service includes consultation with a consultant breast surgeon and a breast care nurse. The breast clinical nurse specialist is available on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Her role incorporates facilitating the breast multi-disciplinary team (MDT), during which the surgeons, oncologists, radiologists and histopathologists review all new breast oncology patients. The breast care nurse provides psychological support and expert advice to patients undergoing breast surgery and assists patients with prosthesis services on recovery. She will be the primary nursing support for patients experiencing breast cancer from diagnosis to chemotherapy treatments.
Macmillan Oncology/Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialists
Our Macmillan team are experienced in caring for, and helping to manage the symptoms of cancer and its treatments. They provide psychological support for the patients and their families and are a constant resource on Pinner ward. Any patient attending Bishops Wood Hospital will be offered the opportunity to meet the Macmillan team. The MacMillan team provide a holistic approach to patient care. This includes helping patients to adjust to their diagnosis and treatment regimens, symptom management as appropriate and a plan of care that is comprehensive, clear and manageable. The Macmillan team also facilitates a telephone service whereby patients can call to discuss issues pertaining to their treatment or need advice on symptom control.
Chemotherapy Nurse Specialist
The chemotherapy nurse facilitates the day case chemotherapy services offered at Bishops Wood. She is passionate about ensuring patient information needs are met prior to commencing chemotherapy and will spend time with new patients to ensure that they have received enough written and verbal information to enable the patient to feel ready to start their treatment. Her expertise in advising patients on managing and preventing side effects helps patients to feel empowered throughout their treatment, a time when people often feel at their most vulnerable.
The Pinner Nursing Team and Health Care Assistants
On Pinner ward we have a highly skilled team comprising of registered nurses and health care support workers who rotate through the in-patients and day-case patients we care for. Our ward sister takes great pride in running a ‘tight ship’ and her philosophy to lead by example is apparent in all aspects of her nursing care. The Pinner nursing team are dedicated to ensuring our patients are treated in accordance with best practice guidelines as determined by the department of health and BMI Healthcare.
We work very closely with the consultants and provide 24-hour support to our patients. We understand that undergoing treatments for cancer can be a frightening time and our goal is to ensure you have complete confidence in our services. We will strive to make the time spent in our care as comfortable as possible for both our patients and their relatives.
