Sinusitis is an infection of the mucous membrane of the sinuses, causing pain, a blocked nose, discharge, reduced sense of smell and the feeling of mucus at the back of your nose or throat.
Sinus surgery is a procedure to widen the passage so that mucus does not become trapped, helping to prevent sinusitis.
Endoscopic sinus surgery is performed through your nose, therefore avoids facial scaring. It is usually performed under a general anaesthetic and takes around one or two hours to perform.
You should be able to go home the next day.
Tonsillectomy is a procedure to remove the tonsils. This is an operation performed on patients who have suffered from infections of the tonsils, tonsillitis. For children the procedure is recommended if the child is suffering from recurrent infections. As the effects are more severe in adults, the procedure may be recommended after fewer attacks.
The operation is performed under general anaesthetic and takes approximately 30 minutes. You may need to spend one night in hospital.
Cholesteatoma surgery removes a sack of dead skin cells, which forms in a pocket in the middle ear. The operation removes the cholesteatoma and aims to stop any discharge, and may also improve hearing at the same time.
The operation is performed through a cut behind the ear under a general anaesthetic and will usually take approximately two hours. You should be able to go home from the hospital the following day.
A grommet is small plastic or metal tube which is inserted into the ear and allows air to enter and prevents fluid build-up. This procedure may be recommended if you suffer with glue ear, which is a common condition where fluid collecting behind the eardrum may cause infections, deafness or ear ache.
The septum is the cartilage and bone inside the nose that divides the nostrils, which is usually straight. Septoplasty and submucous resection are operations performed to correct a deviated septum.
The operation will usually be performed under general anaesthetic and should take around 45 minutes. You should only need to stay in the hospital overnight and may be able to go home the next day.
