"I enjoy caring for the patients and seeing them recover in a caring environment"
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself, background and current role?
My name is Holly Bagnall and I am a Healthcare Assistant working on a general surgery ward for BMI Chelsfield Park Hospital. I have been working here for three years. I am currently studying the Level 5 Foundation Degree in Health and Social care, with Teesside University. When I graduate from the course in 2019 my new role with be Assistant Practitioner. BMI enrolled me on to the course and have given me options to extend my career and have provided me with great opportunities to study and gather new knowledge.
Describe a typical day/week at BMI Chelsfield Park Hospital for you?
I work three long days a week on the ward, and my shift patterns are flexible, working week days, weekends and sometimes bank holidays. I carry out various roles such as admitting patients, meeting their needs, monitoring observations, post-operative care, documentation and discharge procedures. I enjoy working on the ward and every day is different, I work with a range of different patients and surgeons, and it has been interesting to learn about the variety of surgery that is performed in BMI on a daily basis. The day shifts can be very busy but it is always manageable and we have a great team which always makes the shift run smoothly.
What aspects of your role do you enjoy the most?
I enjoy caring for the patients and seeing them recover in a caring environment, it is always nice to see how grateful the patients are and I enjoy receiving and reading the positive feedback on discharge. I enjoy working within the team at BMI such as the nurses, the consultants, and other health care assistants, everyone is so supportive.
How does your role benefit the patients at BMI Chelsfield Park Hospital?
I am there for the patients from the start of the day until the end of the day and for the day case patients I am there to admit and discharge them and it is nice for them to see the same person care for them until discharge. I visit the patients regularly throughout the day and always show a positive friendly attitude which enables the patients to feel relaxed and in safe hands. My role takes the work load of the nurses meaning valuable time can be given to the patients.
What has been your biggest achievement at BMI Chelsfield Park Hospital?
My biggest achievement while working for BMI is building my knowledge and learning new skills. When I started working for BMI three years ago I had a level 3 diploma in health and social care and I didn’t have any surgical experience, it was all brand new to me. Since working for BMI, I have been on several courses, I have gained a level 4 and now I am half way through my level 5 foundation degree, my knowledge has grown massively. I am now very familiar with all the different surgeries and all the different consultant preferences. I have learnt so much and have come so far.
