Benita Fryer

Clinical Services Manager
BMI Goring Hall Hospital

I am passionate about understanding my patients personally. I ensure that my team address their needs on a daily basis

Can you tell us a little about yourself, background and current role?

I am the Clinical Services Manager. I have nursed in surgery for 24 years and been at BMI Goring Hall Hospital for 14 years. I joined the hospital as a bank nurse as it offered me the flexibility I needed as I had small children, now large. I got the impression it was a very friendly hospital and I had time to nurse patients  individually so I decided to stay.

I have been promoted twice into my current role.

Describe a typical day/week at BMI Goring Hall Hospital for you?

I work flexible shifts and we operate 6 days a week. We have a regular rota of theatre sessions, so I know what the patient needs are likely to be before I have left for work. I manage my staff and deliver direct nursing care. I liaise with my consultant colleagues to ensure the unit runs smoothly.

I am responsible for clinical compliance and standards of my unit so I take time in the afternoon to meet with my team individually to ensure that training and competencies are up to date.

What aspects of your role do you enjoy the most?

Gary and BenitaBenita with Clinical Services Manager Gary McHardy I am passionate about understanding my patients personally, I ensure that my team address their needs on a daily basis. My role allows me to continue to care for patients in a senior capacity.

How does your role benefit the patients of the hospital?

It’s great, because I am clinical it gives patients more confidence in the care that we deliver. And as I am on the floor every day I know what my team delivers.

What has been your biggest achievement at BMI Goring Hall Hospital?

Being promoted to DSU sister and developing my motivated team. I work closely with the ward sister and encourage my staff to rotate through the ward to refresh their clinical skills that are not always used in day care.

What activities do you enjoy outside of work?

I am keen runner although my joints are playing up, I feel it the next day. I find that exercise keeps my energy levels where they need to be. I also kayak with my family.

Thanks for your time, Benita.
