At BMI Ross Hall Hospital our experienced Consultant ENT Surgeons are able to offer an extensive range of services for the treatment of most ear, nose and throat related conditions

SINUS SURGERY

Sinusitis is an infection of the mucous membrane of the sinuses, causing pain, a blocked nose, discharge, reduced sense of smell and the feeling of mucus at the back of your nose or throat. Sinus surgery is a procedure to widen the passage so that mucus does not become trapped, helping to prevent sinusitis. Endoscopic sinus surgery is performed through your nose, therefore avoids facial scaring. It is usually performed under a general anaesthetic and takes around one or two hours to perform.

TONSILLECTOMY

Tonsillectomy is a procedure to remove the tonsils. This is an operation performed on patients who have suffered from infections of the tonsils. For children the procedure is recommended if the child is suffering from recurrent infections. As the effects are more severe in adults, the procedure may be recommended after fewer attacks. The operation is performed under general anaesthetic and takes approximately 30 minutes.

EAR SYRINGING/SUCTION

Ear suction is a procedure that uses micro suction to remove wax from the ear. A build-up of ear wax may cause symptoms such as earache, itchiness or difficulty hearing. This is usually a painless procedure, and once the wax has been removed, symptoms usually improve.

GROMMET INSERTION

A grommet is small plastic or metal tube which is inserted into the ear and allows air to enter and prevents fluid build-up. This procedure may be recommended if you suffer with glue ear, which is a common condition where fluid collecting behind the eardrum may cause infections, deafness or earache.

ADENOIDS

Adenoids are small lumps of tissue that can be found at the back of the nose, above the roof of the mouth. Only children have adenoids and they help support their immune system and fight infection. A child's adenoids can sometimes become swollen or enlarged. This can happen after a bacterial or viral infection, or after a substance triggers an allergic reaction. In most cases, swollen adenoids only cause mild discomfort and treatment isn't needed. However, for some children, it can cause severe discomfort and interfere with their daily life.

SEPTOPLASTY

A septoplasty is a corrective surgical procedure to correct a deviated septum, the cartilage and bone inside the nose which separates the two nostrils. A deviated septum may cause symptoms such as a blocked nose, frequent nosebleeds and facial pain. Surgery is the only way of straightening the septum and is the only dependable way of treating the condition. Without surgery the nose will continue to be blocked but is unlikely to get worse.

THYROID SURGERY

In cases of your body's over-production of the hormone thyroxine, your ENT consultant may recommend partial or complete surgical removal of the thyroid gland in order to relieve the associated symptoms. The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic, taking one to two hours, and carefully removes the thyroid through a small incision made in the neck.

SLEEP AND SNORING TREATMENTS

Snoring is a common cause of interrupted sleep or sleepless nights. Our services include the use of devices to improve your snoring. If this fails then surgery is another option. Surgery for snoring is normally required if your airway is a factor that affects the snoring. A procedure called uvulopalatoplasty can be performed. This is where parts of or the entire uvula at the rear of the throat are removed to help reduce snoring.
