Christina Jamieson

Commercial Finance Manager
BMI Ross Hall Hospital

My role benefits the patients as it ensures safe and efficient services for them overall

Can you tell us a little about yourself, background and current role?

I joined BMI in 1999 as a Finance Assistant, initially on a 3 month contract to cover maternity leave. At that point I had my HNC in Computing and HND in Administration and Information Management, but had no formal Finance qualification.
Prior to that I worked in a Finance role for the Ayrshire and Arran Health Board.
The initial contract was extended and I then started working towards my official Finance credentials through the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and have been fully qualified for a number of years now.

Through the years my role has developed and I moved into a Senior Finance Assistant position before my current role of Commercial Finance Manager in the North Region, also covering Kings Park Hospital in Stirling and Carrick Glen Hospital in Ayr.

Describe a typical day/week at BMI Ross Hall Hospital for you?

Due to the nature of it, my time is pretty structured as it depends on where we are in the month I will be working to various deadlines. My role involves month end financial reporting, forecasting and budgeting, costings, business reviews etc.

What aspects of your role do you enjoy the most?

As a typical Finance person, I enjoy the structure that the role entails, spreadsheets and working to deadlines.

How does your role benefit the patients at The Ross Hall Hospital?

It benefits the patients as it ensures safe and efficient services for them overall.
I’d also say that being able to recruit the appropriate staff into roles to ensure high standards of care are provided also benefits the patients.
The staff and level of service provision attracts highly skilled Consultant Radiologists and Cardiologists into the hospital.

I work closely with a range of people throughout the hospitals in both a supportive and questioning role.

What has been your biggest achievement at The Ross Hall Hospital?

Whilst I don't deal with any patients directly, a lot of the role involves ensuring patients are provided with value for money in all of our services by making sure we are competitively priced in the local marketplace.

It's also really important to make sure that our pricing is transparent and that patients fully understand what they are paying for and why.

What type of challenges can you be facing within your role?

I'd say time constraints but that's probably just the same as most people in their jobs – there's always so much to do and demands on my time. It keeps things interesting though!

Thanks for your time, Christina.
