Can you tell us a little about yourself, background and current role?
I qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1990 and have since gained extensive experience across the NHS Acute Care sector in various roles including Sister of Acute General Medical Admissions, Sister of Cardiac Services and Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurse Specialist.
I joined Ross Hall Hospital in 2011 as Clinical Operations Manager, which was a newly created role at the time which focussed on succession planning for Director of Nursing and clinical projects.
I then went on to a 12 month secondment as the Hospital Manager for Kings Park Hospital in Stirling which I loved and learned a lot from.
After that, I returned to Ross Hall Hospital as Director of Nursing and have been in my current role as Director of Clinical Services since August 2016.
Describe a typical day/week at BMI Ross Hall Hospital for you?
The Director of Clinical Services role is so diverse in nature, and with that comes many challenges and huge rewards.
No matter what it is I am working on or involved with, the delivery of patient safety and quality of care provision across all business areas is the number one priority and is fundamental in the successful delivery of the role.
What aspects of your role do you enjoy the most?
I’d go back to the diversity aspect that I mentioned before; it definitely provides a huge amount of job satisfaction.
Another area that I really enjoy is in being able to make a difference in the development of the clinical teams and assisting in furthering their clinical capabilities.
How does your role benefit the patients at The Ross Hall Hospital?
This is through the implementation of quality standards and best practices across patient care and the drive for continual quality improvement. This is a major focus at all times and has a direct impact on how our patients are cared for from start to finish.
It's of major importance that we align ourselves with local and national standards of care and at the same time, be innovative in the delivery of certain processes that make our quality of care unique to us.
What has been your biggest achievement at The Ross Hall Hospital?
I think a major achievement is definitely in the recognition from our regulatory body (Healthcare Improvement Scotland) of their standards, where we have scored the highest mark (five) across all five quality themes.
This was also reflected in our own most recent internal integrated audit. A lot of hard work and effort goes into this all day every day and it is a testament to everyone at the hospital to achieve such praise and feedback.
It is a testament to everyone at the hospital to achieve such praise and feedback.
What type of challenges can you be facing within your role?
I think the main challenge would be striking the balance between both the clinical and commercial elements of the role.
Thanks for your time, Linda.
