Neurology is the study of the nervous system and the diagnosis of conditions that affect it. The nervous system is extremely complex and regulates and coordinates the body's activities. It involves the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles.
At BMI Ross Hall Hospital we offer regular outpatient clinics with Consultant Neurologists to diagnose and manage neurological conditions. These include common problems such as headaches, blackouts, seizures, weakness or numbness in the limbs, walking difficulties and memory problems.
Further investigations may be required in some cases such as an MRI scan, nerve conduction study, EEG or lumbar puncture.
Some of the common concerns for seeing a neurologist are:
- Vision problems
- Memory problems
- Tingling or loss of sensation
- Movement problems
A referral from a GP or other healthcare professional is required.
The Headache Clinic at BMI Ross Hall Hospital provides a comprehensive diagnostic and management service for patients with headache disorders. The clinic has particular expertise in the treatment and management of migraines including chronic and intractable forms of the disorder.
Following an initial consultation with Consultant Neurologist, Dr Alok Tyagi, you may be referred for further investigations such as an MRI scan of the brain, MR angiogram or lumbar puncture, all of which can be carried out at BMI Ross Hall Hospital.
A detailed, individualised management plan would then be formulated by the Consultant. This may include a management plan consisting of tablets for the acute and/or preventive treatment of the headache disorder. Specialised treatments for chronic and intractable headaches not responding to standard treatments are also available and these can be provided either as inpatients or outpatients.
Specific advice regarding lifestyle changes that may result in improvement of the headache disorder can be provided by our Specialist Pain Management Nurse.
