The Alter G Anti-Gravity Treadmill is a new rehabilitation treadmill for physical therapy that reduces up to 80% of the body weight, meaning less stress on lower body injuries or surgical areas. It enables patients to rehabilitate with less pain while decreasing the risk of further injury, which could also help them recover faster. Unweighting is achieved by using air in a pressure-controlled chamber to gently lift the user.
We caught up with David Gallagher to learn more about his background and how using the Alter G Anti-Gravity Treadmill has helped his recovery.
David is a 24 year old Operating Departing Practitioner who suffered a double stress factor and has post traumatic arthritis which caused him to need Triple Arthrodesis operation in March 2016. David started using the treadmill 11 weeks post op for 4 times a week and used it over a 12 week period.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
I had a football injury when I was 22 and I fractured my ankle which got better but from about a year after the injury I started getting a lot of pain in my ankle.
I had several MRI scans and tests which acknowledged that I needed a Triple Arthrodesis operation, which is foot and ankle fusion, as I had an injury caused by arthritis and joint stress.
After my operation I was in a cast for 10 weeks then started using the Alter G Anti-Gravity Treadmill.
Recovery time for this type of operation is usually about 9 months however, I am currently about two months ahead of schedule because of using the Alter G Anti-Gravity Treadmill.
What was your experience of the Alter G Anti-Gravity Treadmill?
It was a strange experience at first but using it helped me to get more confident in putting weight on my foot.
It was an unusual experience because it was not something I had experienced before and it was a weird sensation as you feel like you are floating.
Mentally it gave me a boost too as gaining the confidence to put weight on my foot helped me feel more positive.
How did you find out about the Alter G Anti-Gravity Treadmill?
I found out about the Alter G Anti-Gravity Treadmill through Kirsty the Physiotherapist Manager at BMI Ross Hall Hospital who was providing physiotherapy for my recovery.
I was happy to give it a go as Kirsty recommended it and suggested that it would help speed up my recovery. She was a big help as she understood all about how it worked and was able to guide me about when and how to use it to get the best results.
What were the main benefits of using the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill for you ?
I think one of the main benefits of using the Alter G anti-gravity machine was being able to exercise much earlier than I would have been able to do normally.
I was wearing a weight bearing boot and using the Alter G Anti-Gravity machine gave me confidence to agree an earlier date to take the boot off. I also think there was a positive mental effect for me too because as my recovery time was taking less than originally expected I was able to feel more positive about my situation. Using the Alter G Anti-Gravity Treadmill has enabled me to return to work 2/3 months earlier than my surgeon had anticipated which is a great result and has helped me get my life back to normal quicker.
The Alter G Anti-Gravity Treadmill has played a major role in speeding up my recovery and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who has had lower limb injury or surgery to help speed up their recovery time.
