Private Cryoballoon Ablation in Glasgow

Cyroballoon ablation is a very effective and successful procedure for patients suffering from the symptoms of Atrial Fibrillation (AF).

What is private Cryoballoon Ablation treatment?

Atrial Fibrillation is often treated with drug therapy, but for many patients drugs alone are not sufficient to ease the symptoms. Cryoballoon ablation is a treatment that delivers a cold gas through an inflatable balloon to freeze heart muscle and disable irritable electrical signals that contribute to the AF.

Find out how private Cryoballoon Ablation works

  1. Local anaesthetic will be applied to the site where the Cryoballoon catheter will be inserted at the top of the leg.
  2. The catheter enters the left atrium (top chamber of the heart where the pulmonary veins are).
  3. The balloon is then inflated and moved to the opening of the pulmonary veins.
  4. Contrast dye is injected to ensure a good seal and then the balloon is cooled to -80 degrees Celsius.
  5. The balloon is inflated and cooled for 3 to 4 minutes per vein. This results in modification of the heart tissue which will no longer spread the electrical signals that cause the atrial fibrillation.

The procedure is carried out at BMI Ross Hall Hospital in Glasgow by Consultant Cardiologist, Dr Gary Wright.
