Oral & maxillofacial surgery in Winchester

Expert assessment and treatment of complex mouth, face, jaw, and neck disorders

A Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon is dual-qualified in both medicine and dentistry, enabling them to treat and manage an extremely wide range of complex conditions of mouth, face, jaw, and neck.

It is an incredibly specialised area of medicine, with far fewer Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in the UK compared to other medical specialities. We are privileged to be able to offer an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service here at The Sarum Road Hospital in Winchester, Hampshire.

From an impacted wisdom tooth to a painful or clicking jaw, a swelling in the neck to a facial lesion, expert assessment, diagnosis, and treatment is important.

When you book your private appointment directly with us, whether as a self-pay patient of through private medical insurance, you will benefit from expert, bespoke care, tailored just for you. Why not contact us to book your visit today?

Oral and Maxillofacial surgery is an area of medicine involved with the diagnosis and treatment of a range of conditions, diseases and injuries of the teeth, mouth, face, jaw, and neck.

Common reasons people visit an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at The Sarum Road Hospital include:

  • Adult Oral Surgery
  • Surgical removal of wisdom teeth, buried roots, buried canine teeth, or impacted teeth
  • Dental implants
  • Facial reconstruction
  • Treatment for cysts or tumours of the jaws
  • Screening for Oral Cancer
  • Biopsy and treatment of lesions of the lip, mouth, roof of mouth and tongue
  • Management of problems affecting the soft tissue lining of the mouth, such as white patches and mouth ulcers
  • Treatment of salivary gland problems and tumours, including stone removal
  • Investigation and treatment of sinus problems
  • Treatment of facial fractures and lacerations
  • Treatment for disorders of the mandible (lower jaw) and temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
  • Single and double jaw surgery (Bimaxillary Osteotomy)
  • Investigation and treatment of facial and dental pain
  • Surgery to correct dental or facial deformities
  • Facial skin surgery
  • Bone grafting

Many of the treatments carried out by our Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon are incredibly complex. For this reason, most of the people we see will have been referred to us by their GP, dentist, a maxillofacial specialist from outside the region, or a consultant in another speciality such as ENT or Dermatology.

While many treatments can be provided on-site at The Sarum Road Hospital, others may be carried out an external venue by your Consultant. This will always be fully explained to you if this is needed.

When you first meet with your Consultant at The Sarum Road Hospital, they will take a medical history and talk with you in detail about what is concerning you. They will want to know things like:

  • What symptoms do you have?
  • How long have you had these symptoms?
  • Do you have any pain in your face or neck?
  • Have your symptoms been getting worse over time?
  • Do you have any specific concerns about your symptoms?
  • Are you currently taking any prescription medication, or receiving other treatment?
  • Do you have any underlying medical conditions?

They will also carry out a physical examination of the affected area(s).

You will often have had previous dental X-rays or other imaging by the time you come to see us, and these will be reviewed. If these are not available, or have not already been done, we may arrange for further tests or investigations to be carried out, both to help diagnosis and to aid treatment planning.

These may include X-ray (of individual teeth or the whole jaw – orthopantomography), CT or an MRI scan.

Your clinical history, physical examination, and the results of any tests will be used to make a diagnosis and to plan treatment. They will discuss this with you fully, explaining how any surgery will be done and the results you should expect to see as a result.

If you have any questions or concerns, your Consultant will be happy to talk these through with you during your private appointment.

We see people aged 18+ for assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for all Oral and Maxillofacial concerns. Some treatment may be delivered at another venue but will always be carried out by the Consultant you first see at The Sarum Road Hospital.

While many of our patients live locally in and around Winchester, excellent road access also makes it easy to visit us from further away. (For example, we regularly see people from Andover and Southampton.)
