Sinus surgery

Sinus surgery may be recommended to treat chronic sinusitis. Sinusitis is when the sinuses get blocked with mucus, which can become infected. An endoscope is used during the surgery to unblock the sinuses and restore ventilation.

In some cases, the sinus opening can also become blocked. If this occurs, a maxillary antrostomy procedure is done to help clear the sinus opening.

Your consultant will advise on what treatment you need and provide you with the options available.

Tonsillectomy

A tonsillectomy is the removal of your tonsils. Your tonsils sit at the back of your throat and act as a way of fighting off infection.

Tonsillitis is the result of your tonsils becoming infected. A tonsillectomy is usually performed if you have had a number of bouts of tonsillitis and it keeps reoccurring.

Thyroid surgery

Thyroid surgery may be performed to manage a number of disorders related to the thyroid gland. These can include thyroid cancer, a large thyroid, multi-nodular goitre or a recurrent thyroid cyst.

Three types of thyroid surgery are:

  • Total thyroidectomy – which removes the whole of the thyroid gland
  • Lobectomy – removal of half of the thyroid gland
  • Isthmusectomy - removal of central part of the thyroid gland

Your consultant will be able to advise what treatment you need and will discuss all of the options with you.

Sleep and snoring treatments

Snoring is widely known as a cause of interrupted sleep or sleepless nights. If you make changes to lifestyle, you may see an improvement. However, if it persists you can seek further investigation and you may be advised of some devices that could help.  If these measures have had little or no effect, then surgery can be considered.

Surgery for snoring is required if your airway is impacted as an effect of your snoring. A uvulopalatoplasty can be performed, which is where part or all of the uvula at the back of your mouth is removed.

Septoplasty

A septoplasty is designed to straighten the cartilage that is in between the nostrils, the nasal septum. Once straightened this should improve your nasal flow and stop it becoming blocked again.
