BMI Healthcare is accelerating investment at its flagship Alexandra Hospital in Greater Manchester with an £8m programme of improvements over the next six months.
The money will be spent on:
- An additional MRI scanner;
- Refurbishments of the reception and out-patients areas;
- A new hybrid theatre housing the latest imaging equipment, which means it can be used for diagnostics or as a traditional operating room;
- A range of new equipment for the hospital’s seven operating theatres.
BMI is also expanding the car park at The Alex by creating 130 additional spaces on a patch of unused land.
The latest improvements take BMI’s total capital investment at the hospital to £18m over the past five years.
The Alex in Cheadle is BMI Healthcare’s flagship hospital and is the largest private hospital outside London. It has 600 staff and 600 consultants and treats more than 20,000 patients a year.
Simon Shepherd, executive director at The Alex, said the latest improvements would keep the hospital at the forefront of private healthcare in the region by increasing capacity and further enhancing patient care.
He added: “This is the latest phase of a long-running programme of investment which will ensure The Alex maintains its position as the best-equipped private hospital in the region, delivering exceptional care to our patients with the very latest technology and even greater flexibility.
“This investment programme demonstrates the board’s great faith in the hospital and the exceptional team we are fortunate to have in place at The Alex.”
Mr Shepherd said the new hybrid theatre would enable The Alex to extend its range of operating and imaging services.
With the arrival of a second MRI scanner, The Alex becomes the only private hospital in the region to have a 1.5T scanner and a faster, more powerful 3T version, giving it the ability to scan certain areas of the body in more detail and offer improved imaging quality.
