In 2019 Mr Rawling, an 89-year-old man from Cheshire, was suffering from severe spinal stenosis that left him incapacitated and bed bound. Previously, Mr Rawling had been living an active and healthy lifestyle, and despite being in his eighties frequently went hill walking.
To reduce the pain Mr Rawling decided to see Consultant Neurosurgeon Mr Ankur Saxena, at BMI The Alexandra Hospital, who went on to perform a minimally invasive lumbar decompression on Mr Rawling.
Mr Saxena explained: ‘I performed minimally invasive lumbar decompression for symptomatic relief. The procedure released the pressure on the nerves, without causing significant damage to the surrounding bone and muscle, which resulted in a faster recovery time and less risk of complications. I am glad to see that since the procedure Mr Rawling is active and mobile.’
Mr Rawling described: ‘I was in shock. I have always been relatively fit and healthy and suddenly I was experiencing excruciating pain at the back of my leg. The procedure by Mr Saxena has changed my life. I honestly thought my life as a young at heart octogenarian was over, but I'm glad to report it is certainly not. Yes, I'll probably never race a motorcycle again, and I am not as fast as I used to be, but I am healthy and mobile and I have got my life back again - I no longer need a wheelchair! The team at The Alexandra Hospital were professional and compassionate. I cannot thank them enough.’
