BMI The Alexandra Hospital is the first private hospital in the north of England to offer patients minimally invasive endoscopic spinal surgery. The procedure, which is known as an Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy, offers a patient with a slipped disc an alternative and less invasive option to open spinal surgery.
Mr Ankur Saxena, is pioneering this new treatment at BMI The Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle. He offers the latest surgical and non-surgical treatments relating to all spinal conditions. Mr Saxena commented: ‘Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy has many advantages over open spinal surgery. This is achieved through a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure, otherwise known as keyhole surgery. The surgery is performed through a 1cm long incision under Xray guidance leading to precise decompression with minimal damage to the surrounding tissues and muscle leading to less risk of complications and faster recovery. The procedure can be carried out under local anaesthetic and sedation so is available to patients who are at a high risk with general anaesthetic. A light general anaesthetic is also an option should the patient prefer. With these forms of anaesthesia it also means that the patient can be discharged on the same day as surgery.’Mr Kelly, a recent patient of Mr Saxena’s, has recently had the procedure at BMI The Alexandra Hospital and the results have been life-changing: ‘I had chronic nerve pain before the procedure, and it was affecting my everyday life, even walking to the car was excruciating. Mr Saxena was a professional and an experienced Consultant Neurosurgeon so I knew that I found the right surgeon for me. I felt confident in Mr Saxena and his team; the care and treatment I received was first class.’
