After 40 years The Alexandra Hospital continues to be agile and innovative. Among the hospital's relatively new services is a minimally invasive procedure, known as endoscopic mitral valve surgery. It can be used to perform either mitral valve replacement or mitral valve repair through a type of keyhole surgery. Featured in The Times newspaper in January of this year, The Alex is currently the only independent sector provider in the North West to offer this service.
The aortic valve allows blood to flow from the left ventricle into the aorta. Aortic valve disease prevents the valve working properly, which makes it harder to pump blood around your body. Valve replacement may use a mechanical (artificial) or a tissue (animal) valve.
The aortic root contains the aortic valve and the coronary arteries. Aortic root replacement is normally used to treat an enlarged aorta (aortic aneurysm).
