Executive Director Sam Sheehan welcomes guests to the BMI Beardwood Hospital's 60th anniversary
An open day at BMI The Beardwood Hospital in Blackburn was not just a chance to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the hospital but also the ideal opportunity to declare its new day-case unit officially open.
Current and former Consultants and staff joined patients and visitors to the hospital in Preston New Road, along with the Deputy Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council and business partners including Westholme School and Northcote.
The evening culminated with the opening of The McGrath Suite, a six-bedded day-case suite named in honour of the hospital’s longest-serving team member Sister Pat McGrath. The new suite was developed in line with modern healthcare needs, whereby techniques have improved so much that people who might have otherwise needed an overnight stay after their operation can now return home the same day.

The event was especially pertinent for hospital Executive Director Sam Sheehan, who started her working career there at the tender age of seven. She ‘earned’ 20p for emptying the dishwasher of blue cups and saucers while waiting for her mum to finish her day.
“Beardwood was clearly destined to play a major part in my life and indeed in my career as I have officially been with BMI Healthcare for more than 20 years now,” she said. “That exact room then became my first office at Executive Director in 2010.”
The guests were also shown the hospital’s operating theatres, wards, radiology department, sports injury clinic and cancer care centre.
