Mayor launches new imaging suite and equipment for BMI Beaumont Hospital

The Mayor of Bolton, Councillor Lynda Byrne, launched a new MRI scanner – the most advanced in the Bolton area - as part of a new, purpose-built imaging suite at BMI The Beaumont Hospital on 24 November 2016.

Councillor Byrne, who is a former nurse, opened the suite with Wyn Davies, the Executive Director of the hospital, during an event in which staff at the hospital hosted mini tours of the suite and the equipment for visitors.

Cllr Byrne said: “I am delighted to be involved in the launch of The Beaumont Hospital’s new scanner, a piece of equipment that is vital for diagnostic and treatment purposes. Being from a nursing background myself it is wonderful to see how things have progressed over the years and how people can be diagnosed and treated quickly, and in a lot of cases without surgical intervention. I am most impressed.”

The investment of £1.9m from BMI Healthcare will allow staff to use the scanner to carry out diagnostic scans for orthopaedic, neurological and gastric issues. Two new specialist MR radiographers have also been recruited to work in the suite, taking the imaging team to 5 permanent staff.

The financial investment in the Philips Ingenia 1.5T scanner and the recruitment of additional staff will mean more scans can be carried out at the hospital, reducing waiting times and allowing opening hours to be extended to provide more flexible appointment times. It also allows the hospital to reduce the ‘self pay’ cost of a one-part MRI scan, by more than £200.

Wyn Davies, Executive Director, BMI The Beaumont Hospital said: “We are delighted with the installation of our new MRI scanner. We are now able to offer the population of Bolton and surrounding districts rapid access to high quality scans which will improve diagnosis and patient care.”
