At BMI The Blackheath Hospital in South East London, our ear, nose and throat consultants can diagnose and treat a wide range of ENT conditions.
Sinus surgery is normally performed to treat sinusitis. Sinusitis is when the narrow passages that connect the sinuses become blocked with mucus, leading to infection. The surgery is normally performed using an endoscope to precisely unblock the narrow cavities and restore space to the passages.
In some cases the sinus opening can also become blocked. If this happens, a procedure called the maxillary antrostomy is used to clear the sinus opening.
Your consultant will assess what treatment you need and talk through the procedure, offering you reassurance if needed.
A tonsillectomy is the removal of the tonsils. Your tonsils are at the back of your throat and they are there to fight off infection.
Tonsillitis is when the tonsils become infected. A tonsillectomy is usually performed if you have had numerous attacks of tonsillitis before. The removal of the tonsils helps prevent future infections.
Thyroid surgery is used to manage several disorders of the thyroid gland, including: large thyroid or multi-nodular goitre, thyroid cancer and recurrent thyroid cyst.
There are three types of thyroid surgery:
- Total thyroidectomy – removal of the whole thyroid gland
- Lobectomy – removal of half the thyroid gland
- Isthmusectomy - removal of central part of thyroid gland
Your consultant will be able to decide which form of thyroid surgery you need and explain the reasons and treatment with you.
Sleep and snoring treatments
Snoring is a common cause of interrupted sleep or sleepless nights. If lifestyle changes haven’t made a difference to your snoring, speak to your GP and ask for a referral for further investigation. Our services include the use of devices to improve your snoring. If this fails then surgery is another option.
Surgery for snoring is normally required if your airway is a factor that affects the snoring. A procedure called uvulopalatoplasty can be performed. This is where parts of or the entire uvula at the rear of the throat are removed to help reduce snoring.
A septoplasty is a procedure to straighten the nasal septum. The septum is the bone in the nose that divides the two nostrils. The aim of the surgery is to straighten the septum to stop the nose from getting blocked. There are no alternatives to surgery for this condition; surgery is the only option.
