Interview with Director of Clinical Services

Ronke Kesington-Oloye

Director of Clinical Services
BMI Blackheath Hospital

I find it rewarding when patients and family are happy with the high standard of care they receive.

Can you tell us a little about yourself, background and current role?

I’ve been working in healthcare both nationally and internationally for over 30 years in NHS Acute and Primary Care and Private healthcare. I’m also a Registered General Nurse with a Diploma and Degree in children’s nursing, and a Masters in Strategic Leadership in Health Management. To best equip me to balance clinical and financial pressures I attained Prince 2 project management and Finance qualifications to complement my clinical qualifications and expertise.

I also have 16 years of senior healthcare management experience across many specialties and multi-disciplinary teams. My experience and continued focus is in seeking new ways of working to improve the care of patients and staff. I believe and advocate for the treatment of each patient as staff themselves would like to be treated and I gain personal satisfaction in empowering staff to be effective leaders, and working to ensure a safe working environment so all members of staff are valued for their individual contribution to a functional and cohesive team.

I hope to build on previous successes such as those I achieved when I led my first project in Service transformation and redesigning which received a Modernisation Award from the North East London Strategic Health Authority.

Describe a typical day/week at BMI Blackheath Hospital for you?

Each day begins with visit to clinical areas and a CommsCell meeting which provides a great opportunity to discuss plans for the day with all the key manager and team leaders at the hospital.

I also address and tackle any issues relating to both patients and clinical staff and I’m involved in the continuous development of Blackheath to achieve our goal of being an outstanding hospital and a vision of excellence in Healthcare.

What aspects of your role do you enjoy the most?

I love the clinical involvement of my role, as first and foremost I’m a nurse and so I enjoy utilising my clinical skills. I also find it particularly rewarding when patients and family are happy with the high standard of care they receive.

What do you hope to achieve at Blackheath Hospital?

I act as a resource by supporting all clinical services, directing and reviewing them across the Hospital. I’m passionate about staff development and work with staff and patients to continue to develop promote and share best practice widely.

The promotion of a safe and cost effective environment for patients and staff is key to a successful hospital and together with the rest of the Senior Management team I work to ensure that BMI Blackheath Hospital is a place that patients will be happy to be treated in and where staff are happy to work.

What has been your biggest achievement at The Blackheath Hospital?

I hope to continue in our mission to make BMI Blackheath Hospital a centre of excellence. I am passionate about the BMI’s values and its vision to promote and strive for success and excellence.

I am also very keen on ensuring the provision of high quality care based on the best clinical practice in a cost-effective way that is embraced by all. I also love the great feeling given when the work of a team in improving care receives external recognition.

What activities do you enjoy outside of work?

I volunteer at my local swimming Club as Welfare Officer as a Member of their Executive Committee. I am Director of the former Newham Homes (Non- Executive capacity), Treasurer of The Richestminds group (Charitable Professional group helping with developing professionals, local and international communities). I’m an active supporter of various Charitable organisations, Barnardos’ Children charities, National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), Action for Children, Women of Excellence International - Supporting Orphanages around the world and I attend a local Christian group This Way of Empowerment Ministries aimed at helping local community. I also enjoy traveling, and listening to gospel music.
