The refurbishment and upgrade of the imaging department at BMI The Blackheath Hospital in South East London reached a significant milestone at the weekend (15 July) with the arrival installation of a new MRI scanner.
The giant MRI magnet was lowered carefully into the imaging department using a crane, as workers manoeuvred the 5-ton piece of machinery through the wall and into its resting place.
This week, the MRI scanner will be joined by a new CT scanner and X-ray room, together representing a multi-million pound investment by the hospital’s parent company BMI Healthcare.
The hospital’s executive director, Steve Smith, said: “We are excited about the possibilities that these new machines will provide for our patients and for our Consultants. Now, we will be able to carry out complex scanning where there were limitations with our previous equipment – we can now cater for patients with more complex conditions, patients with complex heart issues. Similarly, we will be able to better support inpatients who need xrays before and after their procedure – both for people needing routine operations and for patients in our intensive care unit.”
The final adjustments to the equipment and refurbished areas are taking place at the moment, and the facility is due to reopen late summer.
The hospital wishes to thank the patients, their families, staff and consultants for their understanding and support during this upgrade.
