Shoulder and elbow surgery in Enfield

Expert assessment for your shoulder and elbow concerns

Whether young or old, shoulder and elbow pain can develop at any stage of life. Experienced as pain, stiffness, or weakness, these issues can rapidly affect your daily routine, stopping you doing the things you love and making it difficult to get to sleep at night.

As one of the largest joints in the body, it’s no surprise that a number of problems can occur in your shoulder. Thanks to the extensive diagnostic facilities at The Cavell Hospital, our orthopaedic specialists can diagnose and treat shoulder conditions such as:

• Arthritis in the joints around the shoulder
• Stability issues in the ball-and-socket joint
• Recurrent dislocations
• Trauma/sports injuries
• Rotator cuff (the four muscles supporting the shoulder blade/scapula) tendon tears
• Frozen Shoulder (stiffness and pain)

Conditions affecting your elbow can be equally debilitating and can quickly affect your quality of life. Elbow conditions treated at The Cavell Hospital include:

• Nerve-related issues such as nerve compression (experienced as pain, weakness, and a tingling sensation)
• Tennis Elbow (inflammation caused by overuse of the forearm muscles and tendons, felt around the outside of your elbow)
• Golfer’s Elbow (inflammation caused by overuse of the forearm muscles and tendons, felt on the inside of your elbow)
• Arthritis of the elbow (usually due to general wear & tear)

With rapid assessment and a personalised treatment plan to help you recover quickly and efficiently, our consultants at The Cavell Hospital prioritise seeing you at the earliest opportunity to give you the best chance of a full recovery.

Our consultants not only address the current problem and symptoms, but hone in on the root cause to prevent further flare-ups. It’s no wonder patients travel from all over Enfield, North London, and the surrounding areas for this exemplary care. Why not get in touch today to book your private appointment?

Very often, shoulder and elbow issues can be managed without the need for surgical intervention, thanks to specialised care on offer The Cavell Hospital.

Non-surgical forms of treatment may include exercise-based therapy and lifestyle modifications, or cortisone steroid injections. Your consultant will discuss with you if any of these are appropriate, and can refer you to our expert physiotherapists for a personalised exercise regime to help strengthen and rebuild your damaged joint. Steroid injections reduce the pain and enable other forms of rehab (which would have been previously unachievable due to the pain), making them a great addition alongside physiotherapy.

If your symptoms have continued despite these treatments, surgery may be your best option. Many shoulder and elbow surgeries can be offered via keyhole surgery, minimising complications and post-operative pain with quicker recovery times.

Some shoulder replacement patients are even able to be managed on a day case basis, thanks to enhanced recovery techniques utilised by our expert surgeons.

Our consultants offer a wide range of shoulder and elbow surgeries at The Cavell Hospital, including:

• Tendon release for certain elbow conditions
• Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair
• Arthroscopic shoulder stabilisation
• Open shoulder stabilisation
• Acromioclavicular joint reconstruction
• Shoulder replacement

To ensure the highest chances of success, our dedicated physiotherapy team are available for both pre-surgery and post-surgery sessions to aid in your preparation and recovery from surgery.

When you first meet your consultant at The Cavell Hospital, they will spend time getting to know you and the problems you’ve been facing. As well as taking a detailed medical history, they may ask questions such as:

• What symptoms have you been experiencing?
• When did you first notice these symptoms?
• Was there a specific incident like an injury, or did the symptoms appear gradually?
• Have you received any other treatment for these concerns?
• Are you currently taking any medication?

This will normally be followed by a clinical examination, involving your consultant manipulating and moving your affected arm to assess the health and condition of the joints.

An x-ray will normally be needed. If you have recently had a scan elsewhere, your consultant will wish to see it, but scans can be arranged on-site if not. Depending on the availability of our radiographers, this may take place on the same day as your initial consultation.

Further scans may be required to confirm a diagnosis, such as an MRI or ultrasound, especially if your consultant needs to look at the soft structures in your arm (helping to assess potential tendon tears).

Once a full diagnosis is confirmed, your consultant will lay out your personalised management plan, and all treatment options will be outlined clearly for you. Often, non-invasive treatment is enough to provide effective relief, in the form of steroid injections (which in some cases can be performed during this initial consultation) or a bespoke physiotherapy programme, catering to your specific needs. Your consultant can advise you if surgery is your best option for recovery, and you can choose how you wish to proceed.
