Can you tell us a little about yourself, background and current role here at BMI The Chaucer Hospital?
I first started working part-time as a Porter at the Chaucer Hospital when I was still at College. I liked the place and people so much…eight years later I am still here. I’ve been a Healthcare Assistant for about six years, working in all departments of the hospital.
Describe a typical day/week at BMI The Chaucer Hospital for you?
I don’t really have such a thing as a ‘typical day’ as every day is varied. It’s one of the reasons I like my job. I might be in the main theatres, outpatients, imaging…
What aspects of your role do you enjoy the most?
I get job satisfaction when I know I get to put somebody’s mind at ease. Some people get very worried about an operation and I like being able to reassure them. Others prefer not to talk, that is okay too. I’m good at judging how a patient is feeling.
Everyone is different and needs to be treated as such, but I am a natural joker and I like to make people smile.
How does your role benefit the patients of the hospital?
My role makes a patient’s stay at the hospital as seamless as possible. People know they can ask me questions and that I am here for them.
What has been your biggest achievement at BMI The Chaucer Hospital?
I see my biggest achievements as the relationships I have built with my patients and colleagues. For example, a couple had been coming to our Oncology department for many years and we had such a genuine rapport that we would get excited to see each other.
What activities do you enjoy outside of work?
I originally studied performing arts. I guess I knew I was destined for the theatre.…just a different type of theatre.
Thanks for your time, Perry.
