Hand & wrist surgery

Our hand and wrist specialists have a wide range of techniques and cutting edge equipment

Our consultants are experts at dealing with all hand and wrist problems, whether they are due to injury or caused by conditions like arthritis.

They are ‘pure’ hand and wrist specialists, meaning they are highly specialised, rather than practising general orthopaedic medicine.

Their goal in every case in to allow you a painless return to a full range of activities, giving you full function with no limitations.

Symptoms that patients come to us with include:

  • Pain
  • Stiffness
  • Swelling
  • Instability
  • Functional limitations
  • Pins and needles
  • Numbness

These can be caused by trauma – usually sports, hobby, or workplace injuries – where people have suffered a fracture or dislocation, repetitive strain injury, a crushed or twisted bone or ligament, carpal tunnel syndrome, nerve damage, or tendonitis.

They can also be caused by conditions such as arthritis, which our consultants are equally well-placed to treat.

Our hand and wrist specialists have a wide range of techniques and cutting edge equipment, meaning there is no need for you to soldier on with painkillers, interrupted sleep, and a lower quality of life.

Our goal is to make private healthcare accessible and affordable for all, and we have very competitively priced self-pay packages, along with payment plan options if you are coming to us direct (rather than via GP or insurance referral).

Our consultants are leaders in their field and have access to cutting-edge diagnostic equipment.

This combination of skills and facilities ensures you receive the treatment that is most appropriate in your circumstances.

That treatment could include a range of options:

  • Pain relief, therapy and advice: analgesics and anti-inflammatories, hand therapy (physio), and education (e.g. on ergonomic working)
  • Injections: these can be curative, or to relieve symptoms where cure is not possible
  • Surgical: repair, reconstructions, replacements and fusions

We use a multi-disciplinary approach to ensure you are treated as quickly, comprehensively, and effectively as possible.

Dependent on the nature of your condition, your consultant may work in partnership with other specialists, who are all based at The Clem for your convenience and reassurance.

These specialists can include rheumatologists (where structural problems have been excluded) and spinal experts (as the arm and neck are closely connected).

This breadth of expertise means you are guaranteed seeing the right person for the right problem.

From the first moment you come to us to the moment you are discharged, we aim to make the process as speedy, convenient and reassuring as possible for you.

Referral

Your journey will start with a referral.

We accept referrals from GPs or health insurance providers, as well as from private patients who book a consultation directly.

We aim to arrange a private consultation for you within as little as 48 hours from referral or first contact, at a time that is convenient for you.

Consultation

During your initial consultation, which will last around half-an-hour, your consultant will talk with you about your specific circumstances and needs.

They will take a thorough medical history and conduct a physical exam.

At this stage, they might request further investigations, such as blood tests or a scan (usually ultrasound or MRI) of a gland.

If further investigations are needed and a diagnosis cannot be made straight away, we will organise a follow-up appointment in around a week, at a time that is convenient for you.

Following their diagnosis, your specialist will go through your results in plain English, so you are able to make an informed decision on treatment.

Treatment and after-care

As we have noted, there is a range of possible treatment paths that your consultant might suggest.

Medical treatments can be obtained in our on-site pharmacy.

If more conservative routes have been exhausted, and you need surgery, this can normally be arranged in around two weeks and will take place in one of our state-of-the-art operating theatres.

Dependent on the treatment plan you have agreed, your consultant may see you for a follow-up (or follow-ups) to check on your progress.
