Gynaecology service in Rochdale

Need to see a specialist about a gynaecological issue?

Whether you are experiencing post-menopausal bleeding, vaginal prolapse or are concerned about the symptoms of cervical cancer, our Consultant Gynaecologists will provide you with a rapid diagnosis and treatment plan that is tailored to you.

Our gynaecology service is provided within our Women’s Health Unit and offers a choice of both male and female consultants and women’s health nurses, all with extensive experience. You will be treated with dignity, respect and empathy at all times.

We offer the following gynaecology services:

Cervical Screening

A cervical screening test (smear test) is used to detect abnormal cells on the cervix.

Detecting and removing abnormal cervical cells can help prevent cervical cancer and identify abnormalities at an early stage. If abnormal cells are detected, your consultant may recommend that these are removed, before they can become cancerous.

Regular screening by your GP will only commence once you reach the age of 25. However, if you are under the age of 25 and are concerned you have cervical cancer we can arrange a smear test for you.

If you would like to make an appointment, at The Highfield Hospital, please call: 01706 655 121

Colposcopy

A colposcopy is a procedure to examine your cervix and is usually recommended if a smear test has shown abnormal cells in your cervix. A microscope with a light is used to look at your cervix and a small tissue sample (biopsy) may be taken to be sent to a laboratory for further testing.

Gynaecological Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy examines the inside of the uterus. A narrow telescope, with a light and camera, is used to examine the uterus to assist the gynaecologist with their diagnosis.

A hysterectomy is used to investigate symptoms such as:

  • Unusual bleeding
  • Pelvic pain
  • Heavy periods
  • Fertility concerns

Hysterectomy Surgery

A Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the uterus (womb) and can be performed laparoscopically (by keyhole) or by open surgery.

Hysterectomy surgery may be recommended if you have one of the following diagnoses:

  • Prolapse of the uterus
  • Cancer of the ovaries, womb or cervix
  • Fibroids
  • Adenomyosis
  • Endometriosis

We understand that the prospect of a hysterectomy may cause you to feel anxious and worried. Our experienced gynaecologists listen to your concerns, consider your welfare and aim to get you back to being you.

A hysterectomy will only be carried out if your chosen gynaecologist believes it will benefit your health and wellbeing.

Gynaecological Laparoscopy & Hysteroscopy

Consultants perform gynaecological laparoscopies to treat or diagnose a condition. Through this procedure the consultant can see inside your lower abdomen with the use of the laparoscope (a tiny camera).

Conditions such as endometriosis and ovarian cysts can be diagnosed and treated by a gynaecological laparoscopy.

Another procedure for diagnosis that is performed at The Beardwood Hospital is a hysteroscopy. This examines the inside of the womb by passing a narrow tube with a camera on the end through your vagina and images are sent to a monitor for a consultant to examine.

Mirena Coil

The Mirena coil releases the hormone progestogen into the womb. It thickens the cervical mucus, and thins the lining of the womb. Although traditionally a contraceptive, the mirena coil can reduce heavy bleeding and can be used to help relieve the symptoms of menopause as progestogen is a part of hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

Vaginal Wall Repair

Childbirth, obesity and age can cause the vaginal wall to become weak. A vaginal wall repair, also known as colporrhaphy, is a surgical procedure that repairs and strengthens the walls of the vagina.

Your gynaecologist may recommend a colporrhaphy, if you have been diagnosed with the following:

  • Vaginal prolapse – when the womb drops down into the vagina
  • Bladder and bowel problems
  • Weak vaginal wall after childbirth

We understand that the prospect of surgery may cause you to feel anxious or worried. Our experienced gynaecologists will take the time to listen to your concerns and will consider your welfare and aspirations for the surgery.

Oophorectomy Surgery

Oophorectomy surgery is a procedure to remove the ovaries.

This particular surgery is used to treat:

  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Large ovarian cysts
  • Ectopic Pregnancy
  • Benign tumours
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
  • Lower the risk of Ovarian Cancer

An oophorectomy can also be performed to lower the risk of ovarian cancer.

We understand that the concept of surgery may cause you to feel anxious or worried. Our experienced gynaecologists listen to your concerns, consider your welfare and aim to get you back to being you.

It is important to note that this surgery means you will not be able to get pregnant. It is imperative that you discuss any concerns, or questions you may have with your gynaecologist.

Sterilisation and Sterilisation Reversal

Sterilisation is considered to be a permanent, choice of birth control. However, if you decide to reverse the operation The Highfield can offer Sterilisation Reversal surgery, also known as Microsurgical Tubal Reanastomosis.

The success of the surgery is dependent upon several factors, which include:

  • The length of the remaining fallopian tube
  • The use of tying
  • Cautery or burning the fallopian tube

The surgery employs the use of thin micro suture to carefully put the tubes back together.

Reversal of tubal sterilisation can be performed by a laparoscopy or through a mini-laparotomy incision. If the procedure is completed by laparoscopy, patients are able to go home on the same day, compared to a mini-laparotomy, which may require you to stay up to up to two days stay in hospital.
