Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy can help with a wide range of injuries and conditions including back and neck pain, repetitive strain injuries, joint pain and arthritis, muscle injuries, post surgery rehabilitation, and sports injuries. There are also physiotherapists that specialise in Women’s Health, acupuncture, pilates or hydrotherapy.

Your first visit will involve an assessment of your condition so that a treatment programme can be specifically developed for you. We offer a wide range of therapies that are often used in combination in a treatment programme.

Integrated care

All BMI physiotherapists are registered with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists and work closely as part of our integrated multi-disciplinary teams within our hospitals so that if necessary, you can benefit from fast referrals and access to the latest imaging technologies to help accurately diagnose and aid treatment pathway decisions.

Services

At BMI The Highfield Hospital we offer the following services:-

Manual therapy
Manual therapy includes massage and manipulative techniques to improve the range of joint movement and reduce pain. It can also reduce swelling, mobilise muscles, joints and nerves, and promote blood circulation to improve healing.

Exercise
Exercise forms an important part of physiotherapy. The aim is to increase mobility, muscle strength, and general fitness, build core stability, and reduce symptoms.

Traction
Traction essentially means steady pulling. It can be helpful in relieving pain in the neck or lower back.

Electrotherapy
Electrotherapy is the use of electrical energy to manage pain, reduce inflammation and rehabilitate muscles.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound can be used as a diagnostic tool or therapeutically within the physiotherapy session. An ultrasound scan uses high frequency wave sounds to create an image of an organ or muscles in the body. Ultrasound is very high frequency sound that cannot be heard by the human ear, but can be detected using a machine called an ultrasound scanner.

It can be used to look at all soft tissue structures and blood vessels. It can also be used for soft tissue injuries and more chronic conditions, with a view to promoting healing and relieving pain.

Scientific research has shown how acupuncture can stimulate the body's physiological responses and reduce pain. Acupuncture causes the brain to release chemicals such as endorphins and serotonin. Endorphins are the body's natural pain killer and serotonin affects your mood and emotions and can also provide pain relief.
There are over 500 acupuncture points on the body. These points are places on your body which are thought to affect the way that your organs and tissues function. You may feel a tingling sensation when the needles are inserted, but it should not be painful.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is offered by some physiotherapists who have undertaken post graduate training. Acupuncture can be used on its own or in combination with physiotherapy to treat a range of musculo-skeletal conditions. Amongst other things, acupuncture may help relieve back pain.

Sports injuries

In addition to regular physiotherapy services, BMI also offer specialist sports injury services. Whether you are a professional sports person or a sports enthusiast of any age, with an acute or chronic injury, we understand your goal is to return to fitness as soon as possible.

At your first appointment, you may be assessed by a sports medicine doctor as well as a physiotherapist. You will also have access to a consultant orthopaedic surgeon if necessary.
At BMI we use our expertise not only to offer the best treatment available for your injury, but also to look at the underlying causes of injury and how to prevent future problems. We can offer you advice on prevention of sports injuries, warm up and muscle training for your particular sport, muscle imbalance and overuse and a biomechanical assessment.

Pilates
Pilates is a moderate form of exercise that can improve balance, flexibility, circulation, posture and help you to relax. Pilates is similar to yoga but with a greater focus on strengthening the core abdominal and back muscles.

Ergonomics
Ergonomics is the discipline concerned with fitting people to their environment in order to minimise stresses on the body. It may involve a work station assessment and advice concerning seating, posture and ergonomic aids.

Gait and biomechanical analysis

Your foot is in contact with the ground for less than a second when walking and about 0.25 seconds when running. Imagine trying to determine normal or abnormal foot function with the naked eye in a quarter of a second? Gait analysis equipment can record your timing sequences during gait as you run or walk.

This enables your physiotherapist or podiatrist to have a clear picture of your foot mechanics. This combined with a lower limb biomechanical analysis can help to determine whether you would benefit from custom-made foot orthotics.
Orthotics are moulded insoles that are contoured to the sole of your foot. They correct the position of the foot so that the heel and arch are held in a stable position, allowing the weight of the body to be distributed normally onto the different parts of your foot. This corrects abnormal foot and leg movements, preventing unnatural posture and relieving pressure on the lower skeleton.
