Gastroenterology in East London

Gastroenterology services available at The London Independent Hospital, including diagnostics at our JAG accredited Endoscopy suite.

Gastrointestinal (GI) conditions refer to problems with the stomach and intestines (the gut or gastrointestinal tract). Common symptoms that our leading gastroenterologists examine, diagnose and treat include:

  • Abdominal pain (aches, cramps, or sharp pan)
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Blood in faeces
  • Bloating
  • Weight loss
  • Indigestion
  • Heart burn

GI conditions are often the source of worry – or even shame – among those suffering from them (particularly at the thought of the intimate examinations that can be involved, for example endoscopy). But it is very important people engage with experts and discuss their symptoms.

Our gastroenterologists are leaders in their field, deal with these conditions every day and, rest assured, have seen it all before!

Their diagnosis might well simply be to offer you reassurance that there is nothing to worry about (particularly in cases where patients come to us with symptoms that worry them due to family history).

Our levels of expertise and quality are reflected in our endoscopy suite being JAG-accredited. This means it meets stringent requirements around staff training, safety and patient feedback, and, should you need it, your endoscopy will be of the highest standard on offer in the UK.

Whatever your needs, we will offer speedy diagnosis and treatment, in a friendly, reassuring environment.

If you are coming to us direct, we also offer very competitively priced self-pay packages, along with payment plan options to help make private healthcare accessible and affordable for all.

There are many different ways to treat GI problems and the key is to understand why you feel the way you feel and then create a treatment framework to help you better understand and manage your symptoms.

How our gastroenterologists treat your stomach and intestinal problems will depend entirely on your personal circumstances. However, the possible approaches they might take include:

  • Lifestyle: the gut is very sensitive to lifestyle. Our specialists till look carefully at things like your diet, your levels of stress and anxiety, and other wellbeing triggers such as exercise regimes and how you sleep
  • Medical: if the solution to your problem is medical, your consultant might prescribe tablets or antibiotics, for example in the case of inflammation (inflammatory bowel disease) or gut mobility (constipation). They might also recommend endoscopic treatment, for example to treat polyps (pre-cancer bowel lesions)
  • Surgery: when necessary, your GI specialist will recommend surgery to treat your condition. Examples where this may be necessary include dealing with excess acid (through a stomach wrap), treating gallstones and haemorrhoid treatment.

Whatever your symptoms, you can be assured you will be seen and diagnosed quickly and accurately, and given a solution tailored to your particular needs.

When you visit our consultants you are assured quick access to leading specialists.

You will also have access to cutting-edge diagnostic equipment that will ensure you receive the treatment that is most appropriate in your circumstances. We put the patient experience at the heart of everything we do.

From the first moment you come to us to the moment you are discharged, we aim to make the process as speedy, comfortable and reassuring as possible for you.

While there is no ‘typical’ patient, you can expect to go through these steps:

Referral

We accept patients via referrals from GPs or health insurance providers, as well as private patients who book a consultation directly, at a time that suits you.

Consultation

You will meet a specialist at our hospital, where we have stringent infection prevention control (IPC) measures in place. We also offer video consultations.

Our consultant will talk to you for 20-30 minutes about your specific circumstances and needs. The consultant will take his or her time to understand your symptoms and history and then put together an investigation plan to see what is causing your symptoms and what will best help alleviate them.

These investigations, which are all done on site, may include:

  • Blood tests
  • Stool analysis
  • Scans
  • Endoscopy (imaging inside of the bowel)

Some of these tests can done immediately, such as blood or stool tests but we aim to complete all tests and create a personalised treatment plan for you, within a week.

Treatment and after-care

In a follow-up consultation, our consultants will create a plan with you and immediately begin your treatment.

At this stage you may also benefit from our holistic, multidisciplinary approach to treatment. Based on your test results, our GI consultant might refer to another member of our highly talented team, which includes radiologists, dieticians, and surgeons.

•Diagnostic oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopy (OGD) includes forceps biopsy, biopsy urease test and dye spray (G6500) from £1,500

•Colonoscopy (H2002) from £2,000
