Nurses tackle Great Wall of China challenge

Two nurses from BMI Princess Margaret Hospital raised £4,000 for a local children’s hospice by walking along the Great Wall of China.

Ward sister Chrissy Jones and staff nurse Domi Barfoot now hope to take up more charity challenges in the future.

“It was an absolutely fantastic experience but we really never realised just how hard it was going to be,” explained Chrissy.

“For a start we didn’t realise that every day we would actually have to make our way to the wall – we were often shattered before we started our ‘proper hike’.

“One day we got totally lost in the undergrowth and had to crawl to the top of the wall on our hands and knees!”

“Our calves were treated to lots of deep heat cream and our feet ached continually but it was a once in a lifetime experience that neither of us will ever forget.”

Domi added: “Being served rice and noodles for breakfast seemed strange at first but, to be honest, they were lovely. As was the Peking duck banquet we had in Beijing on our last night when we were presented with our Great Wall of China medals.

“The Children’s Hospice is the BMI Princess Margaret Hospital’s chosen charity and we are very proud to have been able to raise so much money for such a good cause.”
