What happens if your child has to go in to hospital?

Being in hospital can be daunting for anyone and particularly for children. Having a child in hospital can be equally difficult to deal with if you are the parent.

At BMI The Princess Margaret Hospital, we try to ease the anxiety for both you and your child – we offer you and your child the opportunity to visit the hospital, prior to admission.  This allows you to meet the staff and see the environment.   Our children’s nurses are experienced and will aim to make you and your child feel comfortable and relaxed about their stay. We provide children’s bedding, a selection of toys, and a children’s menu. All children will receive a bravery certificate and BMI teddy bear to take home.

Your Questions

What is a private consultant paediatrician?

What is a private consultant paediatrician?

A paediatrician is a qualified doctor who will have spent many years in general medicine before specialising in paediatric care. They will have had a broad training, from the intensive care of a premature baby, up to disorders of teenagers of school-leaving age.

Most paediatricians in the UK are generalists, and will give a sensible opinion about many conditions. They are particularly knowledgeable about how parents and children interact. Some paediatricians sub-specialise in other areas, for example, neurology or child psychiatry.

Paediatricians tend to be more informal than other doctors, being known to make jokes and even play games with their patients to put them at ease.
