What happens if your child has to go in to hospital?

Being in hospital can be daunting for anyone and particularly for children. Having a child in hospital can be equally difficult to deal with if you are the parent.

At BMI The Princess Margaret Hospital, we try to ease the anxiety for both you and your child – we offer you and your child the opportunity to visit the hospital, prior to admission.  This allows you to meet the staff and see the environment.   Our children’s nurses are experienced and will aim to make you and your child feel comfortable and relaxed about their stay. We provide children’s bedding, a selection of toys, and a children’s menu. All children will receive a bravery certificate and BMI teddy bear to take home.

Your Questions

What is a private consultant paediatrician?

A paediatrician is a qualified doctor who will have spent many years in general medicine before specialising in paediatric care. They will have had a broad training, from the intensive care of a premature baby, up to disorders of teenagers of school-leaving age.

Most paediatricians in the UK are generalists, and will give a sensible opinion about many conditions. They are particularly knowledgeable about how parents and children interact. Some paediatricians sub-specialise in other areas, for example, neurology or child psychiatry.

Paediatricians tend to be more informal than other doctors, being known to make jokes and even play games with their patients to put them at ease.

Do I need a letter of referral from my GP to see a private paediatrician at The Princess Margaret Hospital?

No referral or letter is required - you can make an appointment directly by calling 01753 743405.

How quickly can I get an appointment with a private consultant paediatrician?

This can vary according to availability, but same day appointments are possible. Alternatively they can be made at your convenience in advance.

What if my child is ill at night or at the weekend?

Unfortunately we do not offer an out of hours or weekend service at the moment. If your child becomes ill during these times we suggest that you contact NHS Direct by calling 0845 4647.

What sort of conditions can a private consultant paediatrician treat?

If you are concerned about any aspect of your child’s health or development, the paediatricians would be pleased to see you. However, if your child is acutely unwell or needs emergency treatment, we must advise you to go to your GP or nearest Accident and Emergency Department in the normal way.

What ages of children can be seen?

We can see children of all ages from 0 months to 16 years old.

What specialist facilities for babies and children do you have?

We aim to support the needs of all children and families attending the hospital, and of course we comply fully with the Healthcare Commission requirements for paediatrics in hospitals. There is a team of specialist paediatric staff to support the consultant paediatricians, and you and your child are very welcome to wait in the children’s play area when you come for your consultation.

What happens if my child needs further specialist treatment?

Following your consultation, if required, the paediatrician can refer you to a wide range of clinicians with expertise in paediatric care (e.g. dietician, psychologist, surgeons etc) either at The Princess Margaret Hospital or at other centres of excellence including Great Ormond Street Hospital.
