Over 500 Birmingham NHS patients get private hospital treatment during pandemic

BMI The Priory Hospital, Edgbaston, has completely transformed its services to offer vital support to over 500 NHS patients needing treatment during the pandemic. The hospital has been undertaking time-critical cancer surgery to free up capacity in local NHS hospitals supporting patients with COVID-19.

Alongside urgent cancer care, the hospital is providing a range of other services in specialties including gynaecology, colorectal, liver and thoracic surgery. In addition, the hospital has been running essential vascular and interventional radiology and has adapted to ensure MRI and CT scans can continue to help with diagnostics.

To make this all possible, the hospital has carefully adapted hospital processes and procedures, following national guidance, to ensure the continued safety of patients and staff. This includes updated policies on cleaning, infection prevention and social distancing, while ensuring patients are given support throughout their entire treatment to help them feel at ease. Rigorous processes have been implemented to ensure testing happens in advance of treatment, and patients are required to self-isolate at home before coming in for surgery. This helps to protect the most vulnerable patients and also hospital staff providing the care.

Consultants at the hospital are also offering remote consultations using Microsoft Teams, so patients can have a telephone or video call with a specialist from home where possible. This means more patients can be assessed and referred for onward treatment or a scan if needed.

David Wells, Interim Executive Director at BMI The Priory Hospital, said: “We are proud to be doing everything we can to support our NHS colleagues during the pandemic and offer much needed care to our local patients. We completely understand patients may feel slightly apprehensive about attending hospital during a pandemic, but it’s absolutely vital that services like cancer care can always continue.

“I want to personally thank all of our NHS colleagues who have worked closely with us to get these services up and running in the hospital. Colleagues across four local NHS Trusts have all provided fantastic support to ensure we prioritise the services which will have the most impact in supporting our local community.”
