ENT surgery refers to a broad range of procedures performed on your head and neck area to treat conditions and diseases that affect your ears, nose, and throat. The specialty is led by otolaryngologists (ENT surgeons), who are highly skilled in treating a wide range of ENT issues both surgically and non-surgically.

ENT surgeons treat a range of medical problems, from complex cancers to injuries to chronic infections. There are many non-surgical treatment options that can treat ear nose and throat problems. For example, mucus-thinning medication, steroid medication, and antibiotics help treat less severe issues, such as sinusitis. If you are living with a more long-term problem, such as a deviated septum, you will need surgery to repair the damage to your nose.

At Circle Health Group, we have a vast network of talented ENT surgeons who can help surgically and non-surgically treat a vast range of issues with your ears, nose, and throat.

Our consultant ENT specialists offer regular outpatient clinics and a range of specialist diagnostic services for ears, nose, and throat problems.

The Runnymede Hospital is in the historic town of Chertsey in Surrey. People come to us for ENT treatment from all over Surrey, including Addlestone, Weybridge, Byfleet, and West Byfleet. We also welcome patients from further afield and even overseas.

Here, we take the time to understand the cause of your condition and how it affects you, talking time to get to know you and your circumstances. No matter how severe your symptoms, your consultant will diagnose your condition and build your tailored treatment plan to suit your needs.

You can usually see an ENT surgeon for your initial consultation within 48 hours of booking your appointment with us.

During this initial appointment, your consultant will ask in detail about your general health and your medical history. They will want to know about any existing medical conditions, as well as the current symptoms you are experiencing. They'll ask you how these symptoms impact your everyday life, how often they occur, and whether you have had any treatment for them yet.

In order to assess your symptoms and make an accurate diagnosis of your concern, your consultant will next carry out a gentle but thorough physical examination of your ears, nose, and throat. They will use an otoscope, which is an instrument to examine your ears and illuminate your eardrum so they can see inside it properly. In some cases, they might also use a swab to check your ears for infection. All of this helps your consultant make a diagnosis of the cause of your concern.

Once they have identified what's causing your problems, they will share more information about the type of treatment that might help you.

Your initial consultation is an important and positive step in your journey towards improved health and wellbeing. It's where we start to get to know you as an individual and it's from the information we find out during this session that we will start building a treatment plan, bespoke to your needs.

Your surgeon will give you a good idea of timelines during your initial consultation, after which they'll put together a fixed-price treatment package based on everything you have discussed together.

You might need ENT surgery if you have any of the following conditions:

Obstructive sleep apnoea

Sleep apnoea is a potentially dangerous sleep disorder that causes you to stop and start breathing while you sleep. Because your breathing is interrupted during the night, you become poorly rested and exhausted during the day, which can be debilitating and unsettling.

Sleep apnoea happens because the muscles and soft tissue in your throat relax when you sleep, which restricts your oxygen supply. This causes you to come out of deep sleep and either enter a light sleep or wake up. You will not have any memory of this, but you will feel the effects of the condition during the day.

Bell's palsy

Bell's palsy is a temporary weakness or lack of movement that affects one side of your face. The condition develops gradually and is thought to be caused by the swelling and inflammation of the nerve that controls the muscles on one side of your face - although it is not entirely known why this nerve swells in the first place.

The condition usually resolves itself within nine months but can require surgery to relieve pressure from the affected nerve if not.

Chronic sinusitis

Chronic sinusitis is when the spaces inside your nose and head (sinuses) become swollen and inflamed for three months or longer. The condition doesn’t usually respond to treatment such as antibiotics. It can cause severe headaches, a stuffed nose, aching in your upper jaw and teeth, and a persistent cough. You might need surgery to widen your sinuses to remove the blockages.

A deviated septum

A deviated septum is when the cartilage and bone that separates the nasal cavity in your nose is off-centre. Some people are born with a deviated septum. In other people, it is caused by an injury to your nose, such as a direct blow to your face during contact sport. A badly deviated septum may cause breathing problems, congestion, and severe headaches, so it is important to have it treated.

A tumour

ENT surgeons can remove ear, nose, and throat tumours, which are also known as head and neck tumours. Some tumours will be cancerous and others benign. Your consultant will explain the technique they will use to remove your tumour before you have the operation.

At Circle Health Group, we offer a variety of procedures for issues with your ears, nose, and throat, including:

Endoscopic sinus surgery

This is performed to treat chronic sinusitis. The operation is usually performed under general anaesthetic, meaning you will not be awake during it. Endoscopic sinus surgery is performed through your nostrils with the use of an endoscope (a small telescope with a light and camera attached to the end of it) to examine your nasal passages. Your surgeon will use this instrument to remove any polyps (a growth of tissue) and to widen the passages from your sinuses into your nose.

Cochlear implants

Cochlear implants are electrical devices that stimulate your hearing organ (cochlea) so that you can hear again. The device consists of an electrode array that is inserted into your cochlea and attached to an electronics package placed under your skin just behind your ear. This communicates with a hearing aid-like device placed behind your ear in a similar fashion to a normal hearing aid.

Not everyone is suitable for a cochlear implant. Your consultant will let you know whether the treatment is the right one for your situation.

Deviated septum surgery (septoplasty)

This surgery helps repair a deviated septum. The operation is usually performed under general anaesthetic, meaning you will not be awake during it. Your surgeon will make a cut on the lining of your nose over your septum and lift the mucose (tissue) away from your cartilage and bone. They will remove the parts of the cartilage and bone that are bent and reposition the rest in a straight position.

A tonsillectomy

This is a procedure to remove your tonsils, two small glands located in the back of your throat. The procedure is for people who have recurrent tonsilitis or tonsils that become frequently infected. Tonsillitis is also often performed for disordered breathing. It is a very commonly performed surgery in children and young adults.
