General Surgery

General surgeryAt BMI The Somerfield Hospital in Maidstone our Consultant General Surgeons perform elective and semi-elective procedures. General surgery covers a broad range of operations including gallbladder removal, hernia repair, reflux surgery and varicose vein removal. With us, you can avoid long waiting times for general surgical procedures like laparoscopic cholecystectomies and hernia repair. Our Consultant General Surgeons offer the following procedures:

Hernia Repair

Hernias are very common and occur when a part of your intestine or fatty tissue pokes through into your groin or abdominal area. Sometimes hernias can be the result of sports injuries. Surgical hernia repair takes many forms and our consultants can advise you on the best option based on your individual needs.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy

The impact of gallstones varies from person to person. In some instances patients will require the full removal of their gallbladder. Our Consultant General Surgeons can often perform this surgery using a minimally invasive procedure called a laparoscopic cholecystectomy (‘lap chole’).

Abscess incision and drainage

Abscesses can form anywhere on the body and, in some instances, cause severe discomfort and make patients very unwell. If an abscess poses health complications it will be incised and drained. The severity of the abscess will dictate your recovery time following this procedure.

Varicose vein treatment

Our Consultant Vascular Surgeon will advise the most appropriate treatment for your varicose veins, depending on their severity and your general health. It may be that your procedure can be carried out under local anaesthetic on a walk-in walk-out basis.

We also offer the following diagnostic procedures:

  • Colonoscopy
  • Sigmoidoscopy
  • Gastroscopy
