Wyn Davies

Executive Director,
BMI The South Cheshire
Private Hospital

My working life has always been in hospitals. I have worked for BMI Healthcare for 30 years.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself, your background and your time at BMI The South Cheshire Hospital?

My working life has always been in hospitals; I qualified as a pharmacist many years ago and moved over to hospital management in the early 90’s.

Before starting work at BMI Healthcare I worked in hospitals in the Middle East for three years. This was as a pharmacist initially, and later as a hospital manager.

I have worked for BMI Healthcare for 30 years, 25 of which have been at hospital director level. I’ve been at The South Cheshire Private Hospital for seven years, and I also manage The Beaumont Hospital in Bolton.

What makes The South Cheshire Private Hospital different from other private hospitals in the area?

Even though The South Cheshire Private Hospital is a relatively small hospital, it’s unique in the local area because it is attached to the local NHS trust.

As a result The South Cheshire Private Hospital has all the clinical safety back-up of an NHS trust, with all the benefits of private healthcare such as fast access to appointments, consultant choice, private rooms with en-suites. But the NHS is there to support in an emergency. No other private hospital in the area has that back-up.

What are some of the upcoming developments at the hospital that you could tell us about?

In terms of the fabric of the building and as part of our refurbishment plan we have taken up all the carpets in our ward areas and replaced with new hard flooring which improves infection prevention and control.

In terms of services, we recently recommenced our cataract service and we have also recently undertaken our first bariatric operation, a service that we are looking to expand on in the future.

We recently welcomed a vascular surgeon and as part of this we are now able to offer a new technique to treat varicose veins. Using laser technology, the technique makes the process less painful for the patient and the outcomes are believed to be superior.

Who do you admire in the business world?

I admire Sir James Dyson because he is an innovator, a very clever inventor, and has revolutionised some processes that everyone was used to and couldn’t see ways of improving. He’s also made a worldwide success of his business.

Is there something else you would like to add for the community of Cheshire?

Next year (2019) it is the 30th anniversary of the opening of the hospital, which is something the staff are very proud of. We plan to undertake some special events next year which will involve the local community in celebrating our 30th birthday.
