A health assessment is a thorough check-up of your overall health. Think of it as a full-body MOT. Health assessments are performed by one of our specialists to determine your overall health and to give you a better understanding of your physical and mental wellbeing.

Health assessments are also useful for preventative health checks. They can detect problems in their early stages and highlight any risk factors for certain conditions that might run in your family. More advanced problems and underlying conditions that haven't yet been diagnosed can be detected at a health assessment, enabling you to access the right treatment quickly.

There are many reasons why you might want to have a health assessment at Thornbury Hospital. You might be worried about your health or some symptoms you have, or there might be a history of health issues in your family that you want to check your risk of.

After your assessment takes place, you will receive advice and recommendations based on your personalised consultation and results.

We also have a wide range of additional tests available. Please discuss these with your specialist at your assessment if you have a particular concern you would like to address. If any tests are not clinically appropriate for you, your specialist will advise you. Please note that additional tests will incur an extra fee.

We offer a range of tests that can diagnose different conditions or detect your risk of developing health conditions that might run in your family. Some of those conditions include:

  • Type 1 and 2 diabetes: If you have a family history of diabetes, then there are certain factors that can be monitored at a health assessment to help minimise your risk of developing the condition. These factors include a higher body mass index (BMI), polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and high blood pressure. Diabetes can also increase your LDL (bad) cholesterol levels which can in turn increase your risk of developing cardiovascular (heart) disease
  • Cardiovascular (heart) disease: If you have a family history of heart disease, then there are certain factors that can be monitored at a health assessment to help minimise your risk of developing the condition including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and being overweight. Your health assessment might include the monitoring of your cardiovascular risk score, which tells you if your risk of developing heart problems in the next 10 years is high, moderate or low

Our health assessments include a set of blood tests, dietary and lifestyle discussions, cancer screenings, thyroid function tests and lots more.

We offer four levels of health assessments which can help you take control of your health:

Essential

Our essential health assessment includes a heart health risk assessment and expert lifestyle advice from a specially trained nurse. You will be able to discuss your results with your nurse in detail after the assessment is complete.

Length of assessment: Up to 1 hour with a nurse.

Select

Our select health assessment includes a two-step, in-depth consultation with both a doctor and a health advisor, usually a nurse, to give you a rounded picture of your health. Additional concerns such as gynaecological cancers and a muscle and joint assessment are included. There is also extra time built into the assessment to allow you to discuss any other concerns you may have. You will come away with a personalised medical report approved by a GP.

Length of assessment: Up to 1 hour including nurse and doctor consultations.

Advanced

Our advanced health assessment is an in-depth look at your health and wellbeing, including your heart and lung function, comprehensive blood tests for calcium, liver and kidneys, cardiovascular and nervous system assessments and a head-to-toe physical exam with inspections for possible cancer risks like moles, lumps and bumps. There is extra time built into the assessment to allow you to discuss any other concerns you may have. You will come away with a personalised medical report approved by a GP.

Length of assessment: Up to 2 hours including nurse consultation and up to 1 hour with your doctor.

Advanced Plus

Our advanced plus health assessment is our most comprehensive assessment covering everything from your physical health to your emotional wellbeing. It includes a head-to-toe physical exam with inspections for possible cancer risks like moles, lumps and bumps, as well as a look at your cardiovascular and nervous systems. A comprehensive blood analysis is included to detect illness and possible disease in your thyroid, liver and kidneys, as well as an exercise ECG to test your heart's ability to cope with exercise and stress. Your ECG will be reported on by a cardiologist. Extra time is built into the assessment to allow you to discuss any other concerns you may have, and you will come away with a personalised medical report approved by a GP.

Length of assessment: Up to 3 hours including a cardiovascular exercise test and up to 1 hour with your doctor.

We know that one size doesn't fit all. That's why we offer a range of health assessments, each tailored to your specific needs and your lifestyle.
