Clinical Services Manager-Imaging
BMI The Woodlands Hospital

Much of the role we play is to provide a friendly face or a listening ear to anxious patients

Can you tell us a little about yourself, background and current role?

I trained as a Radiographer in Aberdeen in the late 80’s and have held several roles in the UK and overseas as a Radiographer, Radiology Manager and a few years working for a large Dutch Multinational in marketing and business development.

I have held my current role at Woodlands for over 8 years now and am responsible for the day to day operation of the Imaging department and providing hands-on clinical expertise .

Describe a typical day/week at BMI The Woodlands Hospital for you?

No day is the same in Imaging because of the variety of different cases radiographers get involved in.

Not many people know that 9 out of 10 patients will encounter a radiographer in the hospital journey.

What aspects of your role do you enjoy the most?

I would say the best part of my job is interacting with patients and being a smaller hospital we are lucky to see some patients on multiple visits which provides a familiar face to them when they may need it most.

The second part of my job I enjoy is that not many people can say that they get to drive a million pound piece of equipment in the form of an MRI scanner.

How does your role benefit the patients of the hospital?

Radiographers are a group of people with a wide range of technical and clinical skills. While our role is to produce imaging of the highest quality possible, much of the role we play is to provide a friendly face or a listening ear to anxious patients.

What has been your biggest achievement at BMI The Woodlands Hospital?

The greatest achievement to date is developing my team of Consultant Radiologists, Radiographers, Radiographic Assistants and Administrators into a cohesive team who work together to provide an Imaging service that is second to none. Our patient feedback surveys indicate that we are getting it right.

What activities do you enjoy outside of work?

Outside work I enjoy getting out in the Yorkshire Moors hiking or cycling whenever I can. My other secret passion is exploring the alchemy that is brewing new and exciting IPA’s in my own Brewhouse (Garage).

Thanks for your time, John.
