Can you tell us a little about yourself, background and current role?
I have been a registered nurse for 40 years. I worked in the speciality of General Surgery in the NHS as a Ward Sister and Surgical Matron.
My role at the BMI Woodlands Hospital is Clinical Services Manager for Nursing. I manage the Outpatients Department, I am a member of the management team and the lead nurse for infection control.
Describe a typical day/week at BMI The Woodlands Hospital for you?
Busy - two days are never the same. Every day, my first priority is to ensure that the clinics are set up and ready for the arrival of patients and consultants. I attend various meetings that are relevant to our projects, e.g. clinical governance.
I work both clinical and non-clinical hours in the department. I have monthly audits to complete within the department for infection control, patient records audits and revenue checks. I am allocated 7.5 hours per week to infection prevention and control and I hold monthly training sessions on this subject.
What aspects of your role do you enjoy the most?
I enjoy all aspects of my role, whether I'm working with the patients to plan their care, collaborating with outpatients staff to ensure patients have a good experience when attending the department, or working with our consultants to grow the business and develop new services.
How does your role benefit the patients of the hospital?
My knowledge and experience enhance patient outcomes by ensuring they receive effective and safe care.
I lead my staff to make sure they are confident and competent in their individual roles, and encourage them to grow their knowledge and skills.
What has been your biggest achievement at BMI The Woodlands Hospital?
One of my achievements would be increasing the capacity and demand within the outpatients department, through a close collaboration with the consultants to provide new services. The department has increased the number of minor operations that are performed in the outpatient setting – I have ensured all staff are competent to carry out these procedures. By encouraging staff to become proficient in venepuncture(drawing blood) we manage to cut down on delays for patients in the clinic setting.
I was also an Interim Director of Nursing, working very closely with the ED and heads of departments to prepare and achieve a "GOOD" result from the Care Quality Commission inspection. I have ensured that the infection prevention and control agenda is met so that we are working in a safe environment.
I am also proud that my department has a very good record in retaining staff.
What activities do you enjoy outside of work?
My favourite activity is travelling – I am ticking places to visit off my ‘bucket list’. My husband and I both love gardening and spend as much time outside in the summer months.
I like to socialise with my friends by ‘going to the pub and I attend many fundraising occasions/events with my husband in his capacity as Borough Councillor in Darlington.
I get huge amount of pleasure watching my granddaughter in her dance shows and festivals and I enjoy spending quality time with family.
Thanks for your time, Maggie.
