Endocrinology is the field of medicine that studies, diagnoses and treats disorders of the endocrine system – the system that controls your hormones. The endocrine system is made up of glands that produce and release hormones.

Hormones act as messengers, controlling various bodily functions like metabolism, sugar regulation, reproduction, growth, sexual development, respiration and sensory perception. There are several glands of the endocrine system, including the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, pancreas, ovaries and testes.

Endocrine diseases develop when these glands don’t produce the right level of hormones – known as a hormonal imbalance. Due to the importance of hormones in the human body, this can be the cause of many disorders like diabetes, thyroid conditions, obesity and cancer. Therefore, restoring the optimal hormonal balance is an important means of living a healthy life.

We are proud to facilitate Consultant endocrinologists who can carry out sophisticated endocrinology tests. They can then diagnose and treat or manage your hormonal disorders in order to help improve your quality of life.

Endocrinologists diagnose and treat hormonal disorders by trying to restore the normal balance in your body. Some conditions require the assistance of other specialties, for example, your endocrinologist might need to work with a gynaecologist when treating you.

Some of the most common conditions treated by an endocrinologist are:

Due to the range of conditions that can be caused by hormonal imbalances, the list of symptoms is quite extensive and differs from women to men. If you notice that something is wrong, the first point of contact will be your GP, who will be able to assess your symptoms and conduct a set of tests, usually of your blood and urine. This will indicate if there’s a hormonal imbalance, and they can refer you to an endocrinologist.

Some signs that you might be suffering from a hormonal imbalance if you are a woman are:

  • Irregular periods;
  • Painful or lumpy breasts;
  • Vaginal dryness;
  • Mood swings;
  • Rapid weight gain;
  • Constantly feeling tired;
  • Bloating and
  • Chronic acne.

For men, some hormonal imbalance symptoms you should look out for are:

  • Weight loss;
  • Loss of stamina;

Diabetes treatments

Diabetes is a condition where your blood sugar levels become too high. Sugar levels in your blood are controlled by a hormone called insulin, which is produced by your pancreas (a gland behind the stomach). If your pancreas cannot make enough insulin, or the insulin it is making doesn’t work effectively, then your blood sugar levels will rise – this can be very dangerous.

Diabetes comes in two forms – type 1 and type 2. The main treatment for type 1 diabetes is lifelong insulin replacement. This involves insulin being injected, and the dose must be closely adjusted. This will help avoid high or low blood sugars in the presence of varying levels of physical activity, food intake and the physical health of the person taking the insulin.

The main treatment in cases of type 2 diabetes should always be diet. A reduction in sugary foods and an increase in healthier foods, particularly fruits and vegetables, can benefit type 2 diabetes sufferers. Our endocrinologists and dieticians can help you with this. If your sugar levels cannot be controlled, then tablets may be recommended.

Thyroidectomy

The thyroid gland is a structure in your neck that produces a hormone called thyroxine, which regulates your body's metabolism. If you have an overactive thyroid gland, it produces too many hormones, causing a conditioned named thyrotoxicosis. A thyroidectomy to remove your thyroid gland is one of the ways thyrotoxicosis can be treated. Your ENT surgeon will remove your thyroid gland, and your body will stop producing thyroid hormones. This should treat any distressing symptoms.
