Neurology

Neurology is the study of the nervous system and the diagnosis of conditions that affect it. The nervous system is extremely complex and regulates and coordinates the body's activities. It involves the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. Neurological disorders can range from headaches and seizures to diseases like dementia and Parkinson’s.

Neurology is the study of the nervous system and the diagnosis of conditions that affect it. The nervous system is extremely complex and regulates and coordinates the body's activities. It involves the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles.

Neurologists are the experts who look at your nervous system and identify diseases and disorders. These can range from headaches and seizures to diseases like dementia and Parkinson’s. Neurologists can also deal with traumatic injuries and infections of the nervous system.

A neurologist might refer you to a neurosurgeon if they think an operation in hospital is necessary for your condition, or they may suggest that you work with a physiotherapist, or speech therapist.

At BMI Healthcare, we are proud to facilitate Consultant neurologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, nurses and clinical psychologists. They can help test, diagnose, and treat or manage your symptoms in order to help improve your quality of life.

Neurology is highly specialist. The type of neurological treatment you will receive will depend entirely on your symptoms. Your Consultant will assess your condition and give you a specialist opinion tailored to your needs. If further diagnostic tests or treatments are required, these will be explained fully during your consultation.

There are many diagnostic tests that your neurologist can use to better understand your condition and find the right treatment plan for you. These could include:

Electroencephalogram (EEG)

The EEG is an aid to the diagnosis and classification of epilepsy, detecting abnormal electrical disturbances which may arise from a number of conditions such as space occupying lesions, vascular disease, encephalitis, atrophy and metabolic disorders.

Nerve Conduction Studies

Nerve conduction studies are used in the diagnosis of nerve entrapments (such as carpal tunnel syndrome) and peripheral and diabetic neuropathies. They can also provide information following trauma to the nerve.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed, usually 2-D, images of the inside of your body. MRI scans can show muscles, joints, bone marrow, blood vessels, nerves and other structures within your body. MRI scanning is one of the safest imaging techniques available and can be used to produce images of almost any part of the body and can produce images from all angles.

Lumbar puncture

During a lumbar puncture, a specialist will insert a needle into your back, between your spinal bones. This will allow them to withdraw fluid to test in the lab, or to reduce pressure in your body.

Neurosonography

Neurosonography is a procedure that uses ultrasound to look at your brain and nervous system. Ultrasound is very high frequency sound that cannot be heard by the human ear, but can be detected using a machine called an ultrasound scanner. It can be used to look at all soft tissue structures and blood vessels.
