Sexual medicine

Sexual medicine is a branch of general medicine concerned with sexually transmitted infections (STI) such as herpes, chlamydia and gonorrhoea, as well as sexual health matters for both men and women.

Reasons to use our sexual health service

People generally come to our sexual health service if they’re showing symptoms of STIs or for genital conditions and problems. There are many infections that are sexually transmitted, but not all infections show symptoms. An example of an STI which is generally symptomless is chlamydia, where approximately 70% of women are asymptomatic.

The main risks of such an infection can be pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infertility and painful intercourse. For other sexually transmitted infections the range of symptoms varies depending on the types of infection.
