Vascular surgery concerns the blood vessels (arteries, veins and capillaries) and lymphatic vessels. Vascular surgery includes procedures to reconstruct, bypass or unblock these vessels to improve your blood flow, reduce symptoms and boost your quality of life. Vascular surgery can be lifesaving and can prevent major illness such as stroke or heart attack.

Vascular specialists are typically trained surgeons, however many vascular diseases will not need surgical treatment. Our consultants can help you with everything from lifestyle modifications to medications to help you manage your vascular problems.

It’s important to decide on the right treatment and surgery for your condition, so you can get back to your normal self as soon as possible. The vascular surgery departments at Circle Health Group offer treatment for a wide range of vascular diseases and conditions, including:

  • Varicose veins
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Aneurysms
  • Raynaud’s
  • Peripheral vascular disease
  • Diabetic foot disease
  • Vascular malformations
  • Carotid disease
  • Venous disease
  • Leg ulcers
  • Lymphoedema
  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

The type of treatment you are recommended will depend on your diagnosis. Your Consultant will assess your condition and give you their specialist opinion on which type of surgery is best for your needs.

Some of the procedures our vascular surgeons perform most commonly include:

Femoro-popliteal bypass surgery

Femoral-popliteal bypass surgery or a 'fem pop bypass' is surgery that reverts the hardening of arteries. This happens when abnormal fatty material (called atheroma) coats the inside of the artery.

When the arteries to your legs are affected, you will experience pain in the back of your legs. If the fem pop bypass operation is successful, you should be able to walk with less pain. Surgery should improve the blood supply to your legs and prevent you from getting ulcers or gangrene.

Varicose veins treatment

Varicose veins are enlarged and twisted veins in your leg. Sometimes, weaknesses in the walls of the superficial veins cause them to enlarge. The result is a build-up of pressure in the veins, which bulge out as varicose veins.

Our vascular surgeons offer a wide variety of procedures for treating varicose veins. When you meet with one of our consultant vascular surgeons, they will talk you through all the options available to you, which might include:

Carotid endarterectomy

Carotid endarterectomy is an operation performed on narrowed carotid arteries to help reduce the risk of stroke. These arteries lie in the neck and are an important blood supply to your brain.

As you age, plaque can build up in the walls of your arteries, causing them to narrow. This process is called atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries. If enough plaque builds up, then blood flow through your carotid arteries can be reduced and the smooth inner lining of the arteries can be damaged (known as carotid artery disease).

During a carotid endarterectomy, your surgeon will make an incision on one side of your neck to expose the narrowed carotid artery and will remove the inner lining of the diseased section of your artery containing the plaque.

The first step to access private surgery with us is usually to arrange an appointment with one of our specialists. They will be able to assess and diagnose your condition and talk you through the available treatment options, and together you'll decide on the best route for you.

To book your initial consultation, call our dedicated team of advisors, or take advantage of our easy online booking system.

You can access vascular surgery with us using private medical insurance or by paying for your own treatment.

Not all vascular procedures will be included in your health insurance. Speak to your provider directly to see what's covered in your policy.

If you want to pay for your own treatment, you can either pay in full or take advantage of our flexible payment options, which allow you to spread the cost over a period of up to five years.

Our self-pay customers benefit from fixed-price packages, meaning you'll know exactly what you're going to pay before you book your surgery. Your initial consultation and early diagnostic tests won't be included, but the cost of any procedures and hospital fees are, and so is your aftercare programme.
