What are Dermal Fillers?

Our skin contains a naturally occurring substance known as hyaluronic acid, but over time the level of this substance in our skin diminishes, such that the skin can lose its shape and volume. This effect, combined with muscle activity, contributes to the development of unwanted lines and wrinkles, especially in the lower part of the face. Dermal fillers are soft injectable gels, containing hyaluronic acid, which add volume to the skin, filling the depressed area to create a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Why have dermal fillers?

For many patients, the desire to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles (which can often have a significant ageing effect) is the main motivation for undergoing dermal filler treatment. They are typically used in the lower part of the face, albeit in a wide range of different areas, from the fine lines around the mouth, to the deeper nasolabial lines – the lines between the nose and the corners of the mouth. They can also be used to add volume to the lips, to give a more rounded, fuller appearance, or to address any unevenness or lack of symmetry. Other fillers can be used to re-contour the face, for example by adding volume to the cheeks for a younger, fresher, more vibrant look.

Your dermal filler procedure

Your specialist aesthetic practitioner would undertake a full assessment of suitability prior to treatment, discuss any potential side effects and then discuss the areas you would like to be treated. Once this has been agreed, the most appropriate grade of filler would then be chosen, as different grades are used for different parts of the face and/ or different depth wrinkles. The filler is then injected, using very fine needles, under the skin in the relevant area, via several injection sites. Some dermal fillers contain local anaesthetic to reduce any discomfort, though separate local anaesthetic (either in cream or injection form) is usually available.

Occasional side-effects would include temporary redness, tenderness during injections, and swelling and bruising at the place of injection. Whilst these would normally be expected to settle within a few hours, on occasions the swelling can persist for a couple of days. The risks of allergies and other skin reactions are minimal, but any particular health issues should be brought to the attention of your aesthetic practitioner prior to treatment. The initial improvement in appearance is immediate, with further improvement in the vitality of the skin developing over the following few weeks. Fillers last for different times in different patients and in different areas of the face. Treatment can last for up to eighteen months in areas such as the cheeks, but in areas such as the lips (where there is more movement) re-treatment may be appropriate after six to nine months.
