What is dermatology?

DermatologyThe study and treatment of the skin, hair and nails in health and disease all come under dermatology.  Dermatologists treat patients of all ages and the range of skin disorders treated is very wide, from minor but irksome conditions such as rashes, to serious conditions like skin cancer.

The skin is the largest organ of the body and the most exposed, acting as a barrier against injuries and bacteria.

Dermatology covers multiple areas including cosmetic treatments, medical dermatology, skin surgery, skin cancer management.

When you should see a dermatologist?

Due to the wide variety of problems that can affect the skin, there are many diagnostic procedures that can be carried out such as blood tests, x-rays, skin scrapings or skin biopsies to determine diagnosis.

Some of the more common skin conditions that dermatologist treat are:
  • Severe acne
  • Alopecia
  • Contact allergies
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Warts
  • Fungal infections

Patients may also require dermatological assistance for cosmetic purposes, undergoing procedures such as:

  • Mild acne
  • Rosacea
  • Laser hair removal
  • Hyperhidrosis
  • Anti-wrinkle  injections
  • Scars
  • Mole or tag removals
  • Microdermabrasion

If you notice any changes to your skin, including any changes in the aspect of moles (size, shape or colour), it is recommended to book an appointment and have a dermatologist consult you.

You should see a dermatologist if:

  • You suffer from acne and over-the-counter medication is not working
  • You have persistent rashes or uncontrollable itching and irritation
  • You notice an abnormal discolouration of the skin that changes, doesn’t heal, or it bleeds
  • You have a skin disorder that doesn’t heal such as psoriasis, rosacea or chronic seborrhoea
