What is a laparoscopic myomectoy?
Laparoscopic myomectoy is key-hole surgery to remove fibroids. During this type of surgery, fibroids are detached or shelled-out with long instruments through 3-4 small key-holes in the abdomen, and then removed in strips through one of the holes with a morcellator.
What are fibroids?
Fibroids are non-cancerous tumours that grow in the uterus. They can grow as a single mass or multiple lumps and each can range in diameter from the size of a pea to greater than a grapefruit. They can cause painful and heavy periods, frequent urination, lower abdomen pain and subfertility.
What are the benefits of a laparoscopic myomectoy?
Benefits of having this treatment laparoscopically include shorter hospital stays (1-2 days) and faster recovery time, patients should be back to their normal routine within 2 weeks. The treatment is a safe minimally invasive treatment if you meet the criteria.
This procedure is not appropriate for all patients with fibroids and there are strict selection criteria. Your consultant will discuss your options during your consultation.
